A magnitude 4.7 earthquake<\/a> struck the Campi Flegrei area near Naples<\/a>, southern Italy<\/a>, leaving dozens injured, causing power outages, disrupting train and metro services, and damaging some buildings. <\/p>\n

At least 26 people were injured, according to Italian media.<\/p>\n

About 300 people evacuated from their homes after the quake triggered landslides near the Phlegraean Fields, a large volcanic area west of Naples.<\/p>\n

Italy\u2019s civil protection minister, Nello Musumeci, urged caution and warned that the volcanic activity was not yet over.<\/p>\n

At least five of those injured were taken to hospital and about 300 people were evacuated from their homes in the city of Pozzuoli, near the epicentre of the quake. <\/p>\n

Many residents spent the night on the streets, afraid their buildings would be damaged or collapse.<\/p>\n

The tremor, recorded at 7:46 p.m. (1746 GMT) on Friday, had its epicentre west of Naples, at a depth of about 3 km (2 miles), Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said.<\/p>\n

Italian media reported it to be the strongest quake to hit the region in the last 40 years and caused part of a cliff and several unoccupied buildings to collapse.<\/p>\n

The Italian fire service confirmed minor building damage in and around Naples, though no immediate rescue requests were received. Local rail and metro services were suspended as a precaution. <\/p>\n

Campi Flegrei, a densely populated volcanic caldera west of Naples, has seen increasingly frequent seismic activity, prompting government monitoring. <\/p>\n

Small quakes are common, but stronger tremors heighten fears of a repeat of the 1980s seismic crisis, which caused widespread disruption and displaced thousands from their homes. <\/p>\n

Italy is prone to seismic events, with a history of powerful quakes. <\/p>\n
