{"id":1126498,"date":"2026-08-02T19:31:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T19:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1126498\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T19:31:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T19:31:13","slug":"broadways-hadestown-parts-ways-with-actor-following-online-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1126498\/","title":{"rendered":"Broadway&#8217;s &#8216;Hadestown&#8217; Parts Ways With Actor Following Online Controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEarlier this week, the producers of <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/broadway\/\" id=\"auto-tag_broadway\" data-tag=\"broadway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Broadway<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hadestown\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hadestown\" data-tag=\"hadestown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hadestown<\/a> \u2013\u00a0Mara Isaacs,\u00a0Dale Franzen,\u00a0Hunter Arnold, and\u00a0Tom Kirdahy \u2013\u00a0announced a new principal cast for the long-running musical, with the central role of Hades to be taken by <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/geno-segers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_geno-segers\" data-tag=\"geno-segers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Geno Segers<\/a>, who had previously appeared on stage in On the Town and The Lion King and is known to TV audiences for roles in Banshee, Pair of Kings and Yellowstone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tToday, Segers is out of Hadestown permanently, apparently over past online comments and videos of his that resurfaced on theater blogs in the days after the initial cast announcement. One theater site called OnStageBlog reported that Segers had previously posted what commenters characterized as anti-transgender videos and was critical of pronoun usage choice. The actor also reportedly expressed opposition to trans athletes participating in women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tToday, the producers issued the following statement: \u201cThe producers of\u00a0Hadestown\u00a0and Geno Segers have mutually agreed that Mr. Segers will no longer join the Broadway production. Additional casting will be announced shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSegers, who was to have joined the production on September 1, has made his Instagram private and taken down videos from his YouTube channel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tNo explanation for the decision to part ways was given, and the announcement did not include a statement from Segers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSegers began his theatrical career portraying Mufasa in Disney\u2019s Australian production of The Lion King and later appeared in New York City Center Encores! production of On the Town.
