I was swollen and \u00adretaining water. <\/p>\n<p>My muscles were constantly fatigued. <\/p>\n<p>I was brain-foggy and plagued with low-level <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/20071753\/therapist-signs-anxiety-treatments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anxiety<\/a> and insecurity that made me dread leaving the house.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling with energy \u2013 even if you haven\u2019t got a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/fabulous\/30177974\/davinia-taylor-summer-weight-loss-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weight problem<\/a> \u2013 you are probably dealing with chronic inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of this appears to be so-called healthy convenience foods \u2013 cheap and chemical-laden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/wellness\/27202896\/ultra-processed-foods-nutritionist-says-stop-eating-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ultra Processed Foods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Inflammation is at the root of many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancers<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>One ingredient highly prevalent in UPFs that causes our bodies to become inflamed is vegetable oil, which, like so much of our diet, is crammed with polyunsaturated fatty acids. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m furious with the food manufacturers. <\/p>\n<p>When vegetable oils have been sold to us as the \u201chealthy alternative\u201d to \u00adsaturated fats, no wonder so many of us are in a constant state of chronic inflammation and dealing with excess weight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>TRY THESE FIVE TIPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do not use vegetable oil, rapeseed, sunflower, corn, cottonseed, safflower, soybean or rice bran. Replace with olive, avocado or coconut oil, or butter.<\/li>\n<li>Read ingredients and don\u2019t buy food with \u00advegetable oils.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce intermittent fasting in a way that suits you, to \u00adpromote autophagy (when the body goes into a state of repair and breaks down old cells).<\/li>\n<li>Reduce refined carbs (such as bread and pasta) to cut down your risk of insulin resistance.<\/li>\n<li>Eat more good fats, such as in scrambled eggs, mushrooms, smoked salmon and avocado, to encourage a ketogenic state (where we get 70-75 per cent of our calories from fat, 20-25 per cent from protein and five per cent from carbohydrates).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Futureproof principle #2 &#8211; Get stronger, live longer<\/p>\n<p>ONE of the hallmarks of ageing is our physical strength diminishing.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/34619263\/best-ways-lose-weight-sleep-men-women-different\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">natural muscle mass<\/a> peaks when we\u2019re about 30 and begins to deplete from then on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A young African American woman lifting weights at the gym.\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/wasit-image-fit-young-african-995883099.jpg\" data-caption=\"The older we get, the more we need to build muscle mass to stave off the natural process of depletion\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/wasit-image-fit-young-african-995883099.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>8<\/p>\n<p>The older we get, the more we need to build muscle mass to stave off the natural process of depletionCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>On average, we lose about one per cent of our muscle size and around two per cent of our muscle strength per year from the age of 40.<\/p>\n<p>After we hit 70, this then accelerates to about 15 per cent per decade.<\/p>\n<p>The older we get, the more we need to build muscle mass to stave off this natural process.<\/p>\n<p>If we do not do any muscle-building exercises and sit around eating rubbish, then we will lose muscle mass, develop weaker bones, stiffer joints and poor balance \u2013 all of which lead to more falls. <\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether you are going to a gym or not, or if you haven\u2019t \u00adexercised in ages, you need to boost your dopamine levels.<\/p>\n<p>We want to hack into the feel- good hormones to get you motivated and set the tone for making exercise as enjoyable as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>TRY THESE FIVE TIPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Rethink your perception of the gym and look for one that will stop you making endless excuses to go there \u2013 that is your key to real muscle gains.<\/li>\n<li>Create a power playlist and make your workout dopamine-fuelled.<\/li>\n<li>Commit to ten minutes a day for your home-based muscle-building exercises.<\/li>\n<li>Log your one-rep max (the absolute maximum weight you can lift once) and track your progress each week.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s never too late \u2013 you can start wherever and whenever you want.
