Police have detained a man following a major firearms incident in the High Street area of Bangor.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s understood that shots were fired and a standoff ensued as a result.<\/p>\n

Around 30 heavily armed officers were at the scene of the incident.<\/p>\n

UUP Councillor for Ards Peninsula Pete Wray confirmed that the armed male has since been detained.<\/p>\n

The man is being attended to by the Ambulance Service.<\/p>\n

\u201cMale has been detained and the area is safe,\u201d Mr Wray said. \u201cIt’s been a challenging weekend for the PSNI in Ards and North Down, and I thank them for their service as always.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to the incident\u2019s conclusion, a spokesman for the PSNI said: \u201cMembers of the public are advised to avoid the High Street area of Bangor while police deal with an ongoing incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cCordons are in place. An update will be provided in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n
