{"id":1129118,"date":"2026-08-04T03:48:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T03:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1129118\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T03:48:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T03:48:11","slug":"doomsday-fears-explode-as-three-chilling-cosmic-events-collide-science-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1129118\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Doomsday&#8217; fears explode as three chilling cosmic events collide | Science | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social media has erupted with dramatic &#8220;doomsday&#8221; predictions after three <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/science\/2234479\/uk-largest-eclipse-1999-what-to-expect-need-to-know\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">major astronomical events<\/a> are set to unfold within hours of each other on August 12.<\/p>\n<p>A total solar eclipse, the peak of the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/uk\/2234944\/Perseid-meteor-shower-uk-best-stargazing-spot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseid meteor shower<\/a> and a six-planet parade will all take place on the same day, creating what many online users have dubbed the universe&#8217;s &#8220;triple feature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The unusual timing has fuelled a wave of speculation across social media, with some claiming the celestial line-up could signal everything from the Rapture to a fictional zombie apocalypse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s literally doomsday,&#8221; one user wrote, while another joked: &#8220;If y&#8217;all hear trumpets, mind your business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Others quipped that the universe was about to &#8220;initiate a soft reboot&#8221; and that &#8220;astronomy got a season finale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the online frenzy, there is no scientific evidence linking the three events or suggesting they are a sign of any impending catastrophe. Their appearance on the same date is simply a coincidence, scientists insist.<\/p>\n<p>The total solar eclipse will cast parts of Greenland, Iceland, Spain and Portugal into temporary darkness, while observers across some parts of the United States will experience a partial eclipse, reports the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>Later that night, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its annual peak beneath dark, moonless skies as Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune appear together in a broad planetary parade.<\/p>\n<p>A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely blocking the Sun&#8217;s face for people within the narrow path of totality and briefly turning day into darkness.<\/p>\n<p>Western Iceland and northern Spain are expected to provide the best views, with L\u00e1trabjarg in Iceland forecast to experience the longest period of totality.<\/p>\n<p>Spain could prove the more popular destination because the eclipse crosses a larger land area and August weather is typically warmer. Bilbao, Valencia, Zaragoza and Palma all lie within the path of totality.<\/p>\n<p>Across North America, viewers will instead witness a partial eclipse, with coverage ranging from around nine percent in New York City to roughly 53 percent in St John&#8217;s, Newfoundland.<\/p>\n<p>Once darkness falls, attention will turn to the Perseid meteor shower, which is expected to peak overnight between August 12 and August 13.<\/p>\n<p>The highest activity is forecast during the hours before dawn, when up to 100 meteors per hour could be visible under clear skies.<\/p>\n<p>A new moon will provide ideal viewing conditions by eliminating bright moonlight, although the meteor shower itself will remain active until August 24.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers say the best viewing time will be from around 11pm local time through to dawn.<\/p>\n<p>Completing the celestial line-up will be a six-planet parade, during which Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will appear spread across the pre-dawn sky.<\/p>\n<p>Mars and Saturn should be visible without optical equipment, while Mercury and Jupiter will be harder to spot because they will sit low above the eastern horizon shortly before sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>Binoculars will likely be needed to observe Uranus, while Neptune will require a telescope.<\/p>\n<p>Across much of the Northern Hemisphere, the ideal viewing window is expected to be between 30 and 60 minutes before sunrise, although local weather conditions and a clear horizon will play a major role.<\/p>\n<p>Although astronomers say the three events are unrelated, that has done little to stop speculation online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This sounds like the intro to a disaster movie,&#8221; one X user posted.<\/p>\n<p>Another wrote: &#8220;Well, the ancient Mayans would interpret an eclipse, star alignment, and meteor showers as apocalyptic omens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So maybe a massive war, massive crop failure, or the wrath of god.
