{"id":113014,"date":"2025-05-19T00:26:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T00:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/113014\/"},"modified":"2025-05-19T00:26:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T00:26:11","slug":"internet-baffled-by-bizarre-glass-phone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/113014\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet baffled by bizarre &#8220;glass phone&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent TikTok video showing a woman \u201cscrolling\u201d on a transparent phone has people scratching their heads. <\/p>\n<p>A woman named Cat (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@askcatgpt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@askcatgpt<\/a>) shared a TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@askcatgpt\/video\/7504372418161560878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> \u2014 which has now garnered over 50 million views \u2014 of herself standing in line at a boba tea shop holding what appears to be a clear piece of acrylic glass \u2014 in place of a smartphone. <\/p>\n<p>Cat seems to be treating the \u201ctransparent\u201d phone as if she were using a real smartphone, scrolling while bored, waiting in public. The text, \u201cI\u2019m sorry WTF IS THAT?????\u201d is on the screen above her.<\/p>\n<p>Many commenters were quick to assume it\u2019s a Nokia phone: \u201cNokia transparent phone, released Oct 2024-ish time,\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the new plex from Nokia,\u201d another person chimed in.<\/p>\n<p>Many others were baffled by the bizarre tech. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s on a mission from the future,\u201d someone wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLosing that would be a NIGHTMARE to find,\u201d quipped someone else.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cphone\u201d she\u2019s holding actually exists. And while people can buy it \u2014 it\u2019s not for the reason most would expect.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@askcatgpt\/video\/7504849538209860906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">follow-up video<\/a>, Cat provided more context: \u201cThis is a methaphone. It\u2019s exactly what it looks like \u2014 a clear piece of acrylic shaped like an iPhone. But why does it exist?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She went on to explain that her friend invented it: \u201cHe told me what he wanted to test if we\u2019re all so <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/08\/tech\/excessive-phone-and-screen-use-tied-to-manic-symptoms-in-pre-teens-study\/#!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addicted to our phones<\/a>, then could you potentially curb someone\u2019s addiction by replacing the feeling of having a phone in your pocket with something that feels exactly the same?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@askcatgpt\/video\/7504849538209860906\" data-video-id=\"7504849538209860906\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width:605px; min-width:325px;\"><p>  <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@askcatgpt\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@askcatgpt?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">@askcatgpt<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sending out a batch of methaphones to people who have ideas for (safe) social experiments they\u2019d like to run with them\u2014 break it out on the subway? Show it to a 5 year old? Replace your phone for a week? Probably not. But what do you think?\u201d She asked her viewers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think that a single piece of acrylic could actually start to help us get back in touch with humanity or is this just a weird party trick?\u201d she continued. <\/p>\n<p>Many people in the comments of her follow-up video weren\u2019t exactly sold on the bizarre concept.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.60839844;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"35969343\" width=\"359\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2025-internet-baffled-womans-transparent-104803440.jpg\" alt=\"phone\" class=\"wp-image-35969343\"  \/>The \u201cclear\u2019 phone is actually being used as a social experiment.
