Tom Petty<\/a> has always seen himself as something of an outlier. While his peers often remained in the same lane, seeking safety rather than pushing boundaries, Petty always peered over the other side, testing the waters to see what stuck.<\/p>\n

This ultimately became his main artistic philosophy. The entire rock community was founded on tenacity and having the confidence to take risks, even when the tried-and-true methods are right there for the taking. But it\u2019s those who actively ignore such temptations that often end up making history. \u201cAre we going to inherit nostalgia, or are we going to give this music something?\u201d Petty once said, and he was right. <\/p>\n

The trick, in Petty\u2019s view, is to somehow get the best of both worlds \u2013 to be a true American rock artist<\/a>, you didn\u2019t have to follow trends to become commercially successful, nor venture too far into experimentalism to gain respect and credibility. The secret ingredient was balancing both, which never seemed clearer than Petty and the Heartbreakers\u2019 1982 album, Long After Dark.<\/p>\n

The record\u2019s wild card, \u2018You Got Lucky\u2019, was written to a synthesiser and drum loop created by Mike Campbell. This wasn\u2019t uncommon for Campbell, as he\u2019d written a handful of other tracks using a drum loop, like \u2018Refugee\u2019 and \u2018Here Comes My Girl\u2019. But \u2018You Got Lucky\u2019 bridged the gap between two distinctive worlds, harkening back to Petty\u2019s American rock roots while also offering something completely different.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d cut the tape and tape the loop together,\u201d recalled Campbell, adding, \u201cWe ran it around the room over some mic stands and through the tape heads, and then printed that for three or four minutes, and then recorded the song over that drum loop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with a main riff played by Benmont Tench, Petty came up with the electric guitar solo, aiming for a sound sort of reminiscent of something Ennio Morricone might dream up for a film like <\/a>The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly<\/a> \u2013 a \u201cvibrato arm Strat kind of solo\u201d, as Campbell put it, with \u201ca surf guitar with a tremolo arm\u201d.<\/p>\n

For the lyrics, Petty wrote them from the narrator\u2019s perspective, claiming that \u201cgood love is hard to find\u201d and telling his significant other that she\u2019s lucky to have found him. Funnily enough, although these thoughts might have come from a very real place, Petty had already been married for a good handful of years, meaning he had to get under the skin of someone far more insecure than he felt at the time.<\/p>\n

However, that\u2019s also part of the reason why he later claimed it was one of the most misunderstood songs<\/a> he\u2019s ever done. After all, most people hear the words \u201cYou got lucky, babe, when I found you\u201d, and immediately detect the underlying ego, but Petty maintains that this wasn\u2019t its true intention. In his view, the lyrics were more concerned with basic weakness than any broader sense of self-assuredness.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018You Got Lucky\u2019 is the most misunderstood song I ever wrote,\u201d he told Musician\u2019s Bill Flanagan. \u201cThat\u2019s a very insecure person saying that! But it\u2019s a very real emotion. I found it amusing, really, to sing that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cBut some people said, \u2018God! The audacity!\u2019 Insecure people say things like that to protect themselves, to protect the real pain that they know is coming later.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
