{"id":113251,"date":"2025-05-19T02:40:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T02:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/113251\/"},"modified":"2025-05-19T02:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T02:40:14","slug":"former-us-president-biden-diagnosed-with-aggressive-prostate-cancer-health-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/113251\/","title":{"rendered":"Former US President Biden diagnosed with \u2018aggressive\u2019 prostate cancer | Health News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">US President Trump says he wishes former rival a \u2018fast and successful recovery\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Former United States President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office has said.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday after doctors discovered a prostate nodule, his office said in a statement released on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The former president was taken in for examination after experiencing \u201cincreasingly urinary symptoms\u201d, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,\u201d his office said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s age and health were key concerns among US voters during his time as president, and ultimately torpedoed his bid for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>After a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/program\/newsfeed\/2024\/6\/28\/biden-stumbles-during-faltering-start-to-presidential-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">halting performance in the first presidential debate in June 2024<\/a>, Biden bowed to mounting pressure to end his re-election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s Democratic Party then named then-Vice President Kamala Harris as its nominee in November\u2019s presidential election, which she lost to Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, a fierce critic of Biden who continues to blame the former president for many of the US\u2019s economic and foreign challenges, said on social media that he was saddened by the news and that he and the first lady \u201cwish Joe a fast and successful recovery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Harris said she and her family were keeping the Bidens in \u201cour hearts and prayers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe is a fighter \u2013 and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n<p>Former US President Barack Obama, whom Biden served under as vice president, extended his sympathies and hailed the veteran politician\u2019s efforts to advance cancer research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace,\u201d Obama said. \u201cWe pray for a fast and full recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s cancer diagnosis comes as his 2024 decision to run for re-election was facing renewed scrutiny following the publication of a book detailing the alleged efforts of his inner circle to conceal the then-president\u2019s physical and mental deterioration from the public.<\/p>\n<p>Original Sin, written by CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios correspondent Alex Thompson, includes numerous damning accounts of Biden\u2019s decline, including that the then-president was unable to recognise Hollywood actor George Clooney at a 2024 fundraiser and that aides privately discussed the possibility he would need to use a wheelchair if re-elected.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy became the latest in a growing group of Democrats to acknowledge that Biden should not have run for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a mistake for Democrats to not listen to the voters earlier and set up a process that would have gotten us in a position when we could\u2019ve been more competitive that fall,\u201d Murphy said on NBC News\u2019s Meet the Press on Sunday, before Biden\u2019s cancer diagnosis was made public.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors grade prostate cancer on a scale of 1 to 10 using what is known as the Gleason score. Biden\u2019s cancer was given a grade of 9, according to his office, indicating it is among the most advanced kinds.<\/p>\n<p>While the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer is close to 100 percent for early-stage tumours, the average survival rate for advanced forms of the disease is 28 percent, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Metastasised cancer is more difficult to treat than localised cancer because it involves targeting tumours in different parts of the body, and they may respond differently to therapies.<\/p>\n<p>Biden lost a son, Beau Biden, in 2015, to brain cancer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"US President Trump says he wishes former rival a \u2018fast and successful recovery\u2019.
