If its recent earnings call wasn\u2019t already evidence enough<\/a>, Sony is not backing down<\/a> on its decision to stop manufacturing physical games in January 2028<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Proving it\u2019s had this move in the hopper for quite some time, eagle-eyed gamers have noticed a new disclaimer on the box of disc-based consoles, hitting retailers now.<\/p>\n

The message reads:<\/p>\n

\u201cImportant notice: from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PS Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The statement is repeated several times, in various different languages.<\/p>\n

Obviously, the company isn\u2019t communicating anything we don\u2019t already know, but the disclaimer may save it from potential legal troubles in the future, which I assume is the intention here.<\/p>\n

I think the more pertinent news is that it\u2019s clearly not backing down \u2013 no matter how much pressure it faces from enthusiast fans.<\/p>\n

The firm has already started the process of retraining staff<\/a> at its manufacturing plant in Austria, meanwhile it\u2019s told investors it\u2019s not seeing \u201cany impact<\/a>\u201d from the various protests taking place online.<\/p>\n

A lot of the data seems to be in its favour, with just seven boxed games<\/a> selling more than 100k copies in the US this year. Meanwhile, estimates from Alinea<\/a> reveal Activision\u2019s dire digital-only Call of Duty: Black Ops<\/a> ports have now sold over 11 million copies between them.<\/p>\n

Players plan to stage a week long \u201cblackout<\/a>\u201d later this month, but Sony is forecasting all-time record revenue<\/a> for the PlayStation division this fiscal year, which will see it topple even Nintendo\u2019s pandemic high if achieved.<\/p>\n
