But some microorganisms, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-microbes-conan-the-bacterium-survival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:extremophiles;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">extremophiles<\/a>, show impressive resilience in inhospitable environments, whether that&#8217;s the vacuum of space, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/alien-life-exists-europa-may-120001107.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:hydrothermal vents;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydrothermal vents<\/a> on the slopes of undersea volcanoes, or even NASA clean rooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Our study aimed to understand the risk of extremophiles being transferred in space missions and to identify which microorganisms might survive the harsh conditions of space,&#8221; study team member Alexandre Rosado, a researcher at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2025-05-tough-microbes-nasa-cleanrooms-clues.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;This effort is pivotal for monitoring the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/mars-sample-return-contamination-concerns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:microbial contamination;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">microbial contamination<\/a> and safeguarding against unintentional colonization of exploring planets,&#8221; Rosado added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These hardy microbes may also offer insights that could benefit life on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Earth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Earth<\/a>. The scientists performed genetic research on samples gathered from the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kennedy Space Center;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> in Florida, one of the last stops for Phoenix before its launch from neighboring Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (then known as Cape Canaveral Air Force Station).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They found 53 strains that they determined belonged to 26 novel species. And they dug into the genomes of these newfound extremophiles, looking for clues that could help explain their extraordinary survivability.
