{"id":1133688,"date":"2026-08-06T10:49:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T10:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1133688\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T10:49:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T10:49:31","slug":"extreme-heat-puts-e800bn-hole-in-europes-economy-as-germany-france-and-italy-bear-the-brunt-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1133688\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme heat puts \u20ac800bn hole in Europe\u2019s economy \u2014 as Germany, France and Italy bear the brunt \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extreme heat is becoming a major threat to Europe\u2019s economy, disrupting industries that rely on outdoor work and exposing gaps in worker protection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExcessive heat is a major risk for health and the economy in Europe, and it has significant macroeconomic and even fiscal implications,\u201d Hans Martin F\u00fcssel, climate adaptation expert at the European Environment Agency (EEA), told EUobserver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As wildfires continue to devastate parts of France and Spain, burning more than 42,000 and 80,000 hectares respectively, forcing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www-pp.afp.com\/fr\/incendies-en-europe-les-derniers-developpements-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> AFP, concerns are growing over the scale of the economic damage that heatwaves can inflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europe\u2019s latest heatwave has already pushed temperatures above 40\u00b0C in several countries, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/226432\/as-europe-swelters-paris-judges-say-consumers-arent-to-blame-totalenergies-is\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a> or Spain, while strained healthcare systems contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euromomo.eu\/bulletins\/2026-28\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands<\/a> of excess deaths across Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHeat stress is often called the silent killer,\u201dsaid World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrTedros\/status\/2071205410237723121\" rel=\"nofollow\">post on X<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/1520\/people-are-dying-because-there-is-no-maximum-working-temperature-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"322\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/89d178ab57b80017e766c0f6b42bef2a.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France could face the largest financial losses from summer\u2019s extreme temperatures, with around $240bn [\u20ac211bn]\u00a0through to 2030 in economic output at risk, an analysis by Allianz SE, Europe\u2019s largest primary insurer estimated in a recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianz.com\/content\/dam\/onemarketing\/azcom\/Allianz_com\/economic-research\/publications\/specials\/en\/2026\/may\/2026-05-28-heat-AZ.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat-impact simulation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simulation assessed more than 40 countries around the world and is based on estimated cost of heat waves between 2014 and 2024. Allianz conclusions shed light on Europe&#8217;s limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the 1980s, losses from climatological hazards in Europe have risen<br \/>with sharp peaks in 2021-2022. That year, total losses reached around \u20ac50bn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Annual economic losses caused by weather-and climate-related extreme events in the EU Member States<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2294\" height=\"914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-07-28-at-11.15.12-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-230472\"  \/>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.risklayer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CATDAT<\/a>, RiskLayer GmbH\/European Environmental Agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At temperatures above a 30\u00b0C, people&#8217;s productivity threshold, agriculture and construction sectors are the two industries particularly affected when outdoor work slows, or crops are destroyed because of the extreme temperatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Compared with storms or floods, extreme heat less often shows up as direct damage,&#8221; notes the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And although France topped the ranking in absolute economic losses, Italy, Spain and Germany followed close behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report estimated that the fiscal consequences will also affect France, Italy and Spain the most, as they are economies that are the &#8220;least able to absorb them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Olive crops down 28 percent<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA single day of extreme heat during flowering can destroy an entire harvest, even if the rest of the season is perfect,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveoiltimes.com\/world\/climate-extremes-threaten-mediterranean-olive-harvests-more-than-rising-temperatures\/144293\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Italian agro-climatologist Marco Moriondo, speaking of olive crops.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iberian Peninsula\u2019s olive oil yield could decline by up to 28 percent, another <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ai\/blog\/the-future-of-tree-crops-in-iberia-climate-risk-and-opportunity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> found.
