\n\tSony Pictures<\/a> announced Thursday that director Destin Daniel Cretton<\/a>\u2018s film has landed the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history. It has surpassed $500 million in North America in its first seven days, becoming the fastest film to reach that half-billion milestone by supplanting Avengers: Endgame, which hit the threshold in eight days after opening in April 2019. <\/p>\n

\n\tSpider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a> has notched records at a head-spinning pace, which includes scoring the best-ever domestic box office sums for a Monday and a Tuesday<\/a>. Brand New Day\u00a0became\u00a0the second-fastest feature<\/a>\u00a0to cross the billion-dollar mark globally when Sony announced Tuesday morning that it reached the threshold in six days, bested only by Endgame.<\/p>\n

\n\tOver the weekend,\u00a0Brand New Day\u00a0was in a neck-and-neck battle with Endgame\u00a0for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever. On Monday morning, Sony confirmed that Spidey had indeed prevailed to\u00a0claim the crown with $360 million<\/a>, surpassing\u00a0Endgame\u2019s $357.1 million domestic start, although the latter\u2019s $1.2 billion global launch still held the record for its worldwide opening weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u00a0also set records for the\u00a0biggest Thursday previews<\/a>\u00a0and top\u00a0Friday domestic sum<\/a>, along with giving Sony its best-ever opening weekend. Hailing from producers Marvel<\/a> Studios and Amy Pascal, it carries a $225 million production budget.<\/p>\n

\n\tZendaya<\/a>, Sadie Sink<\/a>, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo<\/a> also star in the new movie from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Cretton. It sees Marvel Comics\u2019 signature hero enduring a lonely existence without his loved ones before an invisible enemy tracks him down.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman<\/a> noted that audience interest in stars Holland and Zendaya does not appear to be a passing trend. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re not popular because they\u2019re popular,\u201d the exec emphasized. \u201cThey\u2019re popular because they\u2019re talented, and they deserve their popularity. They\u2019re lovely, decent, grounded, good-valued people, and they work really hard. So they\u2019ve earned every ounce of their success.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSony projects that\u00a0Brand New Day\u00a0will continue attracting audiences in the coming weeks as the summer starts winding down.
