Over 400 cases were analysed of staff in adult social care who sought RCN <\/a>support as victims of exploitation and extortion between 2023 and 2025.<\/p>\n A total of 33 cases in Northern Ireland were recorded during this period.<\/p>\n The RCN say the true figure is likely to be higher due to the low union membership among migrant workers and \u201cwidespread fear of speaking up\u201d.<\/p>\n Professor Nicola Ranger, RCN Chief Executive and General Secretary, said: \u201cOne of the major causes is a visa sponsorship system which creates a dangerous power imbalance, allowing some unscrupulous employers to use withdrawal of sponsorship as leverage to extort money, alter contracts, reduce pay or bully and harass with impunity.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a shocking scenario which hands individual employers all the power.
