{"id":1137934,"date":"2026-08-08T14:16:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1137934\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:16:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:16:16","slug":"eu-urges-meta-tiktok-to-step-up-monitoring-after-ceuta-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1137934\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Urges Meta, TikTok to Step Up Monitoring After Ceuta Migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rabat \u2013 The European Union has called on Meta and TikTok to strengthen their monitoring of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2026\/08\/333661\/spain-monitors-new-social-media-campaign-inciting-new-mass-crossing-to-ceuta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">social media<\/a> platforms and cooperation with fact-checkers following the mass migration crisis in occupied Ceuta.<\/p>\n<p>The call came after a false claim that the border between Morocco and Ceuta was open spread rapidly online ahead of the arrival of thousands of migrants.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said the Commission had discussed the issue with representatives of Meta and TikTok on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlatforms must act decisively to protect the integrity of the digital space, especially during crises,\u201d Virkkunen said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HennaVirkkunen\/status\/2085807830074904693\" rel=\"nofollow\">post<\/a> on X. She called for stronger monitoring and closer cooperation with fact-checkers, adding that the EU would follow up on the issue Monday.<\/p>\n<p><b>Disinformation under scrutiny<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The spread of the border rumor has raised questions over whether online disinformation contributed to the sudden movement toward Ceuta.<\/p>\n<p>EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner described the episode as a test for the bloc\u2019s border security and its ability to withstand disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>Brunner said the crossings had been fueled by criminal <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2026\/03\/285056\/spanish-police-uncover-advanced-drug-smuggling-tunnel-in-ceuta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">smuggling<\/a> networks as well as disinformation. He cautioned, however, that it was too early to determine who may have been behind the online activity.<\/p>\n<p>He said the EU needed to improve its ability to track disinformation trends on social media and work more closely with Europol and other EU agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The Ceuta episode has also become a political flashpoint, with right-wing and far-right voices using the crisis to argue that Europe is facing uncontrolled migration.
