A young girl has suffered \u2018burns <\/a>to her feet\u2019 after stepping on a disposable barbecue<\/a> which was left behind and covered with sand on a Co Down<\/a> beach. <\/p>\n

The incident happened on Murlough beach on Sunday afternoon, with coastguard <\/a>teams from both Newcastle <\/a>and Kilkeel <\/a>tasked to the incident to assist the ambulance service<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The Newcastle coastguard said that the young girl hadn\u2019t realised the barbecue was there as it had been covered with \u201ca thing layer of sand\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe girl had been walking in the dunes when she accidentally walked onto a disposable barbecue,\u201d a spokesperson said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is believed the barbecue had been used earlier and, being too hot to remove, was covered with a thin layer of sand before those who used it left the beach.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow invisible to walkers, the girl didn\u2019t realise it was there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would appeal to visitors to Murlough and other coastal areas not to bring disposable barbecues. <\/p>\n

\u201cSet aside the risk of wildfires, they are dangerous to unsuspecting walkers and dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

DUP MLA for South Down Diane Forsythe <\/a>said the incident was \u201cabsolutely horrific\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is absolutely horrific, injured whilst out on the beach because of someone being careless leaving danger behind,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to our dedicated coastguard teams for attending to this and wishing the girl a speedy recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident comes as the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS)<\/a> has advised those eating outdoors in the good weather to choose a picnic over a disposable barbecue. <\/p>\n
