(ABC News: Monish Nand)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement published on Monday as part of the settlement, Energy Australia said it &#8220;acknowledges that carbon offsetting is not the most effective way to assist customers to reduce their emissions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;While offsets can help people to invest in worthwhile projects that may reduce greenhouse gas emissions elsewhere, offsets do not prevent or undo the harms caused by burning fossil fuels for a customer&#8217;s energy use,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company said it &#8220;apologises to any customer who felt that the way it marketed its Go Neutral products was unclear&#8221; and that it has &#8220;has now shifted its focus to direct emissions reductions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"Blockquote_blockquote__YVWQm ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowAuto__c1_IL\" data-component=\"Blockquote\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Burning fossil fuels creates greenhouse gas emissions that are not prevented or undone by carbon offsets,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This could have been made clearer to customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Storing carbon in plants is not equivalent to keeping it stored in fossil fuels (by not burning those fossil fuels in the first place).&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A window of the Sydney law courts.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/add46b986203e216cb0871445a93ab30\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Federal Court was expected to hear the case this month. (Supplied: Nic Seton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Parents for Climate CEO Nic Seton said it was a &#8220;historic acknowledgement&#8221; and showed &#8220;climate action must be backed by real action \u2026 not marketing spin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It will set a new standard for the way carbon offset products are used by corporations and sold to consumers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This isn&#8217;t just about EnergyAustralia \u2014 it&#8217;s about holding companies to a higher standard across the board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Greenwashing isn&#8217;t harmless.
