Mairead Corrigan later married her sister\u2019s widower Jackie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Speaking to The Irish News last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/as-long-as-im-able-to-do-so-my-message-is-that-peace-is-possible-nobel-prize-winner-mairead-corrigan-maguire-on-the-peace-people-and-five-decades-of-activism-around-the-world-GNMEDCGHRNDZ3A3JI3FLKIPY2I\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/as-long-as-im-able-to-do-so-my-message-is-that-peace-is-possible-nobel-prize-winner-mairead-corrigan-maguire-on-the-peace-people-and-five-decades-of-activism-around-the-world-GNMEDCGHRNDZ3A3JI3FLKIPY2I\/\">Ms Corrigan-Maguire described the Peace People as \u201ca call from the heart to say there\u2019s another way\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI always believed political change was coming \u2013 like the tide, you don\u2019t stop it. But when violence comes, it destroys the opportunity for quick change. I\u2019m absolutely convinced of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cViolence is always wrong, no matter who uses it, whether it be state violence or the paramilitaries. It is always, always wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">After initially gaining widespread support, the movement\u2019s momentum slowed before petering out amidst public and internal acrimony. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">SDLP leader Claire Hanna said anniversaries, such as that of the Maguire children\u2019s deaths, showed \u201cthe peace we enjoy today cannot be taken for granted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Founder of the Peace People and Nobel Prize recipient Mairead Corrigan Maguire\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2JMDHECPUFDNJB4GLQETOU4WQY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"571\"\/>Mairead Corrigan Maguire pictured at her home in Co Down last year.
