Leeds United can still sign Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, but they now face a far more expensive fight, according to transfer journalist Pete O\u2019Rourke<\/a>. Fulham have pushed ahead with an offer worth \u00a325.7m plus add-ons, taking the overall package close to \u00a330m as Southampton<\/a> look to squeeze the highest possible fee from the market.<\/p>\n

Leeds United face \u00a330m test as Fulham take control<\/strong><\/p>\n

Time is clearly working against Leeds United. Charles has entered the final year of his Southampton contract, yet growing interest has given the Saints little reason to lower their demands. Then came another major development on August 9.<\/p>\n

Fabrizio Romano reported that Fulham had agreed a \u00a330m package for the 22-year-old, with the midfielder expected to undergo a medical on Monday before signing a five-year deal. Reports put the structure at around \u00a326m guaranteed and \u00a34m in add-ons. Leeds United can still try to intervene, but they would need to go above Fulham\u2019s offer and convince the player to change course.<\/p>\n

Charles enjoyed a standout 2025\/26 Championship season, playing 33 league matches and scoring four goals while adding two assists. He logged 2,234 minutes, averaged 1.6 tackles and 4.3 ball recoveries per game, and added another goal in three EFL Cup appearances.<\/p>\n

Those numbers explain Leeds United\u2019s interest. Charles can cover ground, protect the back line and play with a calmness that stands out for a 22-year-old midfielder. His role as Northern Ireland captain adds another layer to his appeal.<\/p>\n

Even so, Leeds United<\/a> should stop short of a bidding war. Their reported offers of \u00a320m to \u00a323m already showed serious intent. Jumping beyond \u00a330m because Fulham have struck a deal would look panicked. Southampton can demand a premium while several clubs remain interested, but paying more than \u00a330m for a player with one year left on his contract carries obvious risk.<\/p>\n

Leeds United must protect their budget and move on<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fulham can offer wages that Leeds may struggle to match without distorting their financial plans. Charles reportedly wants the top-flight opportunity in a better-placed club, which makes a late counter-offer even less attractive.<\/p>\n

Leeds could waste valuable time here. Southampton may use another bid to push Fulham higher, while the Whites could still lose out after committing even more money. Romano\u2019s reported agreement should serve as a warning.<\/p>\n

Daniel Farke\u2019s recruitment team would do better to redirect that money into several areas. A cheaper European midfielder or a loan from a leading Premier League academy could add depth without draining the budget.
