Half the city is away, everyone else is determined to sit outside (without the SPF required), and restaurant plans are thus expected to feel like holidays in their own right. I spent two weeks out of the city myself (eating extremely well, but more on that later) and came home newly hungry for London restaurants that make staying put feel just as exciting.

Happily, this month’s guide to where to eat in London has plenty of them, including one of the city’s most ambitious tasting menus, a breakfast of champions, excellent neighborhood tapas and a City courtyard made for stretching out summer. As ever, these are not simply places I’ve eaten recently, but restaurants I’m actively encouraging you to book now.

Where To Eat In London, August 20261. IGNI, Mayfair

The problem with cooking over fire is that almost every restaurant now wants to tell you it does. Often, this translates to some singed hispi, an expensive grill and a so-called “purpose” doing little more than finding synonyms for “flame” across its menu. Here, it does anything but.

Chef Theo Clench, formerly of Cycene, has taken over the former HUMO site and pushed its open-fire premise somewhere more intricate, ambitious and significantly more seafood-focused. Menu descriptions arrive as terse little trios—tuna, foie gras and shiso; cuttlefish, buckwheat and celtuce; turbot, lettuce and sake—but the cooking behind them is anything but abbreviated. Smoke is used as seasoning.

Sit at the counter if you can (they’ll provide little personal fans for you in hot weather, which I found a particularly comforting touch); watching the team manage flame, embers, smoke and timing gives the whole experience its pulse, but IGNI’s real achievement is making all that technique feel purposeful. I couldn’t think of anyone I wouldn’t take for a special occasion, and that’s no mean feat in this ever-competitive locale.

2. The Courtyard At COYA City

COYA City, London

COYA City

Hidden away from the surrounding towers on Throgmorton Street, COYA City’s courtyard shifts the restaurant’s dark-and-sexy, high-energy Peruvian experience into something looser and considerably better suited to summer, mixing a number of signatures with lighter dishes; bright ceviches and tiraditos, tacos, seafood and plates from the grill, all built for grazing over a long lunch or turning an ostensibly responsible after-work drink into dinner. All of which was punchy, expertly balanced, and far more thrilling than it needed to be for an alfresco menu. Boy, was it a nice reminder of what COYA does well.

Naturally, the drinks have a pull of their own, too. The Lugo Spritz combines pisco, elderflower, marigold and Veuve Clicquot, while the Margarita Amarilla leans into passionfruit, agave and lime. There is also a very serious selection of Provence rosé should you wish to pretend Bank is Ibiza for an afternoon.

3. Breakfast At Brown’s Hotel, Mayfair

Breakfast at Brown’s Hotel, London

Brown’s Hotel

Brown’s is my favorite hotel in London, which means I am not neutral here, but neither am I wrong. Open since 1832, it has the increasingly rare ability to feel properly grand without making guests feel as though they have wandered into someone else’s inheritance, and breakfast is perhaps the best—and certainly the most affordable—way to experience it.

The dish to order is the Crab Omelette Arnold Bennett, made with St Ewe eggs, generous folds of sweet white crab meat, mousseline, Parmesan and chives, which is undoubtedly rich but deeply savoury and quite possibly one of the best breakfast dishes this side of the Atlantic.

At £36, it’s not an everyday breakfast, but nothing about Brown’s feels everyday. Come for the omelette, bring a few friends (so you can nibble parts of whatever they order—undoubtedly excellent as everything is), stay for the flawless service, and leave feeling as though your morning has been severely upgraded.

4. La Lluna, Whetstone

La Lluna, London

Lela London

Often, us writing-about-restaurants types become so preoccupied with new openings, chefs and tasting menus that we forget most people want little more than a great local restaurant. Somewhere generous, gastronomic without pretensios and genuinely equipped to handle a group of people who don’t want to be the person in charge of ordering.

La Lluna’s Whetstone restaurant is exactly that kind of place. Its menu is built around trad Spanish tapas spanning jamón, manchego and padrón peppers through to croquetas, gambas al ajillo, tortilla and oversized pans of seafood paella or arroz negro. These are dishes designed to cover a table, accompanied by a bottle of Rioja or a dangerously easy jug of sangria, and fought over accordingly. It’s warm and hospitable, with a garden that proves particularly persuasive during London’s few reliable weeks of summer, and an undoubtable gem for those at the most northernly tips of the Northern line.

August can be a strange ol’ month for eating out in London.
