Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder did not mention Socceroos captain Harry Souttar by name but confirmed the Championship club have put a revised offer in for a player, when asked for an update on transfer links with the Australian.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking after the club\u2019s 3-0 win over Mansfield Town in the EFL Club, manager Chris Wilder didn\u2019t mention Souttar, but answered: \u201cWe put a bid in for a player. So, that\u2019s positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think we\u2019ve got to understand, it\u2019s a different landscape for the football club now. It\u2019s the first year without parachute payments as well. So, that makes a big difference and we have to cut our cloth accordingly, and we have to be smart. It\u2019s a difficult one because we\u2019ve missed out on some decent free transfers.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, that\u2019s disappointing. But we have to move on and that\u2019s part and parcel of the job. We have to accept that and try and get the best out of what we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leicester City might have handed Harry Souttar the armband in their EFL Cup win over Northampton Town on the weekend<\/a>, but reports continue to suggest Sheffield United want to sign the Socceroos\u2019 World Cup captain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to local newspaper The Star, the Championship outfit put a \u201cbeefed-up\u201d bid in over the weekend after an initial rejection, although it is reportedly short of a $AUD 15 million number (\u00a38m) that had been reported over the weekend. It is being reported that the Foxes\u2019 starting point is \u00a310m.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the Blades about to sell Gus Hamer to Coventry City, they have funds to spend, although can\u2019t spend it all given they\u2019ve now lost use of their relegation parachute payments.<\/p>\n

How confident was Wilder that that bid would be successful, he said: \u201cYou never know. We have backups all the time. But we have to have good players that come in. We\u2019ve got good players at the football club and I don\u2019t just want to go safe on a player that might be OK.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want two players that hopefully can start in the team to take us to the position we are in. It\u2019s an extremely competitive league. Teams all over the place, as you\u2019ve seen, what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n

\u201cParachute payments and clubs selling players for big money. There\u2019s a club that\u2019s having a go and rightly so, but they brought in big money for a couple of players. So, that\u2019s the way it is. I\u2019m happy with the group, but I\u2019m always trying to improve it. I think we\u2019re two or three players off being really, really competitive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we will be competitive in what I\u2019ve seen so far this season. But to take that next step, then hopefully we can do the business that we do. But we have to be patient with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to the weekend, Foxes boss Russel Martin reiterated how much he wants to keep the Australian World Cup star.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think any player in any club in the world is for sale at any point, if it\u2019s for the right money,\u201d Martin said. \u201cI can\u2019t come out here and say: \u2018Harry is definitely not for sale\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was my choice, he wouldn\u2019t be, even if someone came in with an astronomical amount of money, but I\u2019m not the money man. So for me, he\u2019ll be here. He\u2019s happy to be here. He\u2019s trained fantastically well.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s everything I thought he would be in terms of a professional, honest, hard-working, vocal, puts his body on the line, even in training \u2013 he\u2019s been amazing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it would take something very big for him to leave here, and if it was right for the club and for him, then it means that someone\u2019s paid an awful lot of money to get the man that they want. Right now, it\u2019s so far away from that, it\u2019s not even a discussion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why everyone can be quite calm about it, including Harry. He\u2019s not come to me once and said he wants to leave. I think he\u2019s very happy and he understands that playing this way can be really good for him. So as long as he\u2019s happy, I\u2019m happy and everyone\u2019s happy, we\u2019re good.\u201d<\/p>\n

On why he made him captain, he explained: \u201cHe captains his country, he\u2019s played at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been brilliant in pre-season since he\u2019s been back, so he\u2019ll captain the team tomorrow and then we\u2019ll assess everything during the rest of the transfer window. I did the same at Southampton; James Ward-Prowse captained the team in the first game and then didn\u2019t play for us again.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I think we have to be open and flexible with it, but tomorrow, Harry will be captain. I think he deserves to be. He\u2019s a real leader, and then we\u2019ll assess it as and when it goes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
