{"id":1141678,"date":"2026-08-10T14:04:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T14:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1141678\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T14:04:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T14:04:13","slug":"amanda-knoxs-edinburgh-fringe-show-profoundly-respectful-to-meredith-kercher-audience-says-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1141678\/","title":{"rendered":"Amanda Knox\u2019s Edinburgh Fringe show \u2018profoundly respectful\u2019 to Meredith Kercher, audience says \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A controversial show by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amanda-knox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amanda-knox\/\">Amanda Knox<\/a>, who was falsely imprisoned for the murder of Meredith Kercher, is \u201cprofoundly respectful\u201d, audience members have said despite claims it \u201ctrivialises\u201d violence against women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Knox was convicted and later cleared over the killing of her friend Kercher in Italy in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Convicted in 2009 for the murder and sexual assault of the British foreign exchange student, along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, Knox was eventually cleared in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Knox performed the show, named Cartwheel, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/edinburgh-festival-fringe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/edinburgh-festival-fringe\/\">Edinburgh Festival Fringe<\/a> on Friday night. The title refers to a story that claimed she did cartwheels in the police station after her friend\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It has sparked controversy, with more than 6,000 people signing a petition calling for it to be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The sister of Kercher said it \u201cnormalises and trivialises violence against women\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, people leaving the show on Friday night said it was both \u201cpowerful\u201d and \u201crespectful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think that [Knox] has every right to tell her story and to deal with her own grief and pain and what\u2019s been taken from her in her own way,\u201d a man, who didn\u2019t want to be named, leaving the show said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe was profoundly respectful to the victim of the crime. She said that she never got the chance to express her own grief about what had happened, because as soon as the crime had happened, she was put in this position of having to defend herself. So I think that was important for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man said Knox was also \u201cgenuinely funny\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nigel, in his 60s from London, also found it to be respectful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI thought it was really authentic \u2013 [Knox] came across as quite powerful and carried the room,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere was a lot of clapping and standing at the end, and a lot of laughter all the way through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nigel added: \u201cI thought it was an opportunity for her to tell her story in a very different environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He also said that Knox refers to Kercher in the show as someone she had known as a friend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man from Glasgow, who did not wish to be named, said the show is more about storytelling than it is about comedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was a wee bit hesitant about going along because I knew that there was controversy, and I understand Meredith Kercher\u2019s family being concerned \u2013 I\u2019ve got total sympathy for that \u2013 but having seen the show, there\u2019s nothing in that show that is, you know, like offensive or demeaning to Kercher,\u201d the man said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s trailed as a stand-up comedy, but it\u2019s not a stand-up comedy show.
