One quick note on the numbers: these are estimated market values from that 2024 study, and since none of these places will ever hit the open market, treat them as ballpark figures.<\/p>\n

Buckingham Palace \u2014 the $4 billion home the King is in no hurry to live in<\/p>\n

Buckingham Palace<\/a> is the crown jewel of the portfolio in every sense, valued by Benham and Reeves at around \u00a33.1 billion ($4 billion), making it one of the most valuable homes on the planet. However, it has a surprisingly humble streak. Elizabeth I stayed at St. James’s Palace during the threat of the Spanish Armada, and it’s also where Mary Tudor signed the treaty surrendering Calais. It’s also where new monarchs are officially announced with the ceremonial transfer of power after the death of a reigning king or queen. (Perhaps that was because Edward VIII was known to have a strong dislike for most forms of hunting, giving up shooting after World War I, citing its cruelty, according to The New York Times<\/a>.) For 35 years, the royals there were quite literally living in a different hour from the rest of the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the monarch’s official residence in Scotland. Situated at the foot of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and valued at around \u00a360 million ($77 million), it’s also the scene of one of the most notorious murders in royal history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 1561 it became home to Mary, Queen of Scots, and on the evening of March 9, 1566, her jealous husband Lord Darnley and a group of armed conspirators burst into her private supper room. As the Royal Collection Trust<\/a> describes, the queen was six months pregnant when the men seized her David Rizzio, her favorite royal secretary, and stabbed him to death in the next room. The grisly detail that keeps visitors coming to look at the historical locale? The palace still marks the spot where he died, and people have long claimed that the bloodstains from Rizzio’s body can still be seen in the Outer Chamber where his dead body was left on display.<\/p>\n
