Liverpool\u2019s highly rated 18-year-old defender, Ifeanyi Ndukwe will be unable to play competitive football for the club in 2026 because he does not currently qualify for a UK work permit under post-Brexit rules.\n<\/p>\n
Ndukwe, who joined Liverpool from Austria Vienna in a deal worth \u00a32.6m, has impressed during the club\u2019s pre-season campaign and has already featured prominently for new manager, Andoni Iraola.\n<\/p>\n
But despite his performances, the Austria youth international cannot play in Liverpool\u2019s competitive matches this year because he failed to reach the points target required for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE).\n<\/p>\n
BBC reported on Tuesday that the development means \u201cNdukwe can play in Liverpool\u2019s remaining friendly against Como on August 16, but not in their competitive fixtures once the season begins.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 6ft 6in defender has been given an extended opportunity to impress during pre-season because Liverpool are short of options at centre-back.\n<\/p>\n
Joe Gomez suffered an injury in the club\u2019s first pre-season game, while \u00a360m signing Jeremy Jacquet has been dealing with a knee problem and Giovanni Leoni is recovering from a serious knee injury.\n<\/p>\n
Ndukwe started alongside captain Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool\u2019s 3-1 defeat by Monaco at Anfield on Sunday, having already played two full 90-minute matches and an 80-minute game in pre-season.<\/p>\n
He also impressed in the match, including winning defensive duels and producing a backheel that drew a reaction from the Anfield crowd.\n<\/p>\n
Van Dijk described the teenager as a \u201cbig talent\u201d after playing alongside him against Monaco.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cBig talent, big guy and he wants to learn. I had a brief conversation with him, especially in the last couple of days. For him, it is just progressing,\u201d Van Dijk said. <\/p>\n
Ndukwe\u2019s situation stems from the \u201cwork permit system introduced after Britain\u2019s exit from the European Union, which requires overseas players to meet certain criteria before they can play competitively in England.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
Players who do not meet the standard GBE requirements can instead be registered through an Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) slot.\n<\/p>\n
Premier League and Championship clubs can have up to four ESC players, depending on the percentage of minutes given to England-qualified players in the previous season.\n<\/p>\n
Liverpool\u2019s percentage last season means the club has only \u201cone ESC place available, and that has already been taken by Senegalese teenager Mor Talla Ndiaye.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ndukwe therefore faces \u201ca loan move to continue his development and build the points needed to qualify for a work permit.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
His agent, Georg Lederer, said in July that a loan club would be found where the teenager could gain experience at a high level.\n<\/p>\n
Liverpool\u2019s next \u201cdecision is expected within the next fortnight, with the club and Ndukwe\u2019s representatives still considering his options in Europe.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
Ndukwe needs to accumulate \u201c15 points across several categories while on loan to qualify automatically for a visa.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
The quality of the league in which he plays will influence how quickly he can accumulate the required points.\n<\/p>\n
