We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 eRQajs\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/exeter-fire-mincinglake-valley-park-devon-b3031262.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hot and dry weather is expected to continue<\/a> into Thursday with nearly three-quarters of England and all of Wales now suffering from drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures are expected to peak around 37C on Thursday, as a fifth heatwave of the year puts the UK on track for its hottest ever summer.<\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/rutland-water-hambleton-village-drought-heatwave-reservoir-b3031149.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">71.3 per cent of England has been plunged into drought <\/a>after a record dry July and a very dry start to August, putting immense pressure on water resources for homes and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Officials from the National Drought Group said on Monday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/everything-can-t-heatwave-b3031061.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">there are now 45 million people living in drought conditions<\/a>, with 27 million already under water-use restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Where droughts have been declared: <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>That came after the East Midlands, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Kent and East Sussex, and Solent and the South Downs were added to the growing list.<\/p>\n<p>The North East and Yorkshire were also recategorised as having \u2018prolonged dry weather\u2019 \u2013 the stage before drought \u2013 with nowhere now deemed in normal status.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Grayling, strategic drought lead at the Environment Agency and chair of the National Drought Group, said: \u201cDrought conditions are worsening and will continue to do so until we see significant and sustained rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the hot and dry weather is taking a real toll on farming and there will be long-lasting impacts on our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drought continues to pile pressure onto farming, freight shipping and energy production after the country saw its driest July in 190 years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/772418653_2830065327369304_4438605188212660342_n-copy-ffb205dd.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The fire in Exeter on Tuesday\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The fire in Exeter on Tuesday (Devon Wildlife Trust)<\/p>\n<p>August has so far seen just five per cent of the expected rainfall for the month, with warnings of more dry weather and highs of 38C to follow this week.<\/p>\n<p>A drought usually refers to a period of prolonged, unusually dry weather that affects nature, the environment, and people. <\/p>\n<p>In July, 19 counties across England recorded effectively no rainfall \u2013 1mm or less \u2013 across the whole of the month, the Met Office figures show, causing river levels to fall and leaving ground dry and at risk of wildfires. <\/p>\n<p>Firefighters raced to battle a major grass fire at a park in Exeter on Tuesday as conditions worsened in the south.<\/p>\n<p>Devon and Somerset fire and rescue service said a large grass fire had broken out at Mincinglake Valley Park just before 3pm and advised people to stay away.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2288343907...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A 'No Fishing' sign is pictured in the dried up Falmer Pond in Falmer, East Sussex\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>A &#8216;No Fishing&#8217;
