Newcastle United need to strengthen in a number of positions across the pitch. The midfield has to be the top priority. The forward line needs reinforcements as well. At times, it feels like the defence ends up getting overlooked amid all this.<\/p>\n

Newcastle United<\/a> are paper-thin in both full-back positions. Even Tino Livramento is recovering from an injury, while Lewis Hall continues to be linked with a move to Man Utd.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, their centre-back ranks are just slightly better. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are 34 years of age. Sven Botman has struggled badly in pre-season, with his performance against Everton drawing heavy criticism from fans and the media alike.<\/p>\n

So, Newcastle United could do with another centre-back at this point in time. It looks like a former Liverpool player, currently shining in the Bundesliga, is on their radar.<\/p>\n

According to Fussballdaten (via SB Nation<\/a>), Liverpool have already held talks with Jarell Quansah\u2019s representatives and family as it explores bringing him back to Anfield. But Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are among the clubs monitoring the 23-year-old\u2019s situation as well.<\/p>\n

The report further clarifies though that Bayer Leverkusen have no intention of parting ways with Quansah this summer. Liverpool are believed to have a buy-back clause. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, it would take any other club a transfer fee in the region of \u20ac70 million to \u20ac80 million to sign Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen. <\/p>\n

Will Newcastle United be open to making an offer of that magnitude for the former Liverpool centre-back? Or will they try to sign one of their other rumoured targets for a lower transfer fee?<\/p>\n

Other centre-backs Newcastle have been linked with<\/p>\n

Newcastle United have also been linked with Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta on a consistent basis. The Italian international could be on the move this summer.<\/p>\n

Importantly, it is believed that it would require an offer in the region of \u20ac50 million to sign Scalvini from Atalanta. That is significantly lower than what it would take to sign Quansah. Of course, he does not have Premier League experience.<\/p>\n

Fikayo Tomori is another player whose name has done the rounds of the Newcastle United rumour mill this summer. And when it comes to experience, he would be ahead of both Quansah and Scalvini.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, all the noise around that potential move has faded away though. So, it does not look like Newcastle United will be making a move for the former Chelsea man after all. <\/p>\n
