{"id":1145691,"date":"2026-08-13T06:18:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T06:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1145691\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T06:18:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T06:18:14","slug":"the-major-revamp-planned-at-a-struggling-manchester-food-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1145691\/","title":{"rendered":"The major revamp planned at a \u2018struggling\u2019 Manchester food hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The plans have been submitted to the council.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New Century food hall\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1_JS275492102.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"New Century food hall\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">New Century food hall(Image: Kenny Brown \/ MEN)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A Manchester food hall which has \u2018struggled\u2019 to get by is set for a major revamp with a new live music space alongside a pizza venue and bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">New Century Hall, based near Victoria station in the city centre, submitted its plans to Manchester City Council in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A report stated that the food hall \u2018has not proven commercially viable\u2019, prompting the venue to take a new approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a aria-label=\"Click hereLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=b8052254-66af-41f3-9dae-7bbb0e3391c6&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to get the biggest stories straight to your inbox in our Daily Newsletter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Planning documents explained more about the decision: \u2018While the venue has successfully hosted events and performances, the day-to-day food hall operation has struggled due to the scale and character of the space and the building\u2019s location slightly removed from the primary retail and leisure core of the city centre.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Changes planned for the venue include \u2018creating two independently operable yet connected venues capable of supporting a wider range of activities throughout the week.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The new layout will \u2018focus on live music\u2019 alongside hosting a programme of gigs and private hire events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It was reported in May that the new music space could fit up to 450 people for gigs, and that the new music space in the building would be separated by a sound-proofed partition wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Planning reports continued: \u2018It will be a mid-sized room with the flexibility to be a band&#8217;s first gig venue, a place for the college students to hone their talents, a private party hire, a new community hub for the area.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">New Century is based in the grade II-listed New Century Hall building. The venue reopened in 2022 after a \u00a310m revamp of the 1963-dated building, which was first built for use as offices and a conference hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The planning application is set to be decided by mid-September, while the deadline for a consultation on the plans will pass this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">New Century sits in the NOMA area of central Manchester, part of the city where just a short distance away new apartment blocks have been built for growing numbers of people looking to call Manchester home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The plans have been submitted to the council.
