The company says it was set up to support the security interests of the UK and its allies, and believes Britain needs to modernize its industry and digital skills during what it calls a crucial time for global defence.

Talks with investors are still ongoing and could change.

Blair’s second venture in defence tech

This is Blair’s second venture in the sector. He serves as chairman of Skyral, a modelling and simulation company spun out of Improbable, as per the company’s website. It raised $20 million in a Series A round in June 2025, led by NOIA Capital, with Accrete Capital taking a smaller stake.

Since then, the company has signed deals with NATO and the UK Ministry of Defence and joined the Omnia Training group alongside Raytheon and Rheinmetall.

Blair took an unusual path into defence. He first trained as a teacher, then became a football agent for Mexican internationals Héctor Herrera and Marco Fabián, before moving into modelling and simulation software. His brother, Euan Blair, started the edtech unicorn Multiverse.

Pyra is working on software that aims to bring together scattered battlefield and intelligence data into one interface. The company hasn’t shared details about its team size, revenue, or progress.

Investment is flowing into the sector faster than products are being launched

Pyra’s timing is a big part of its appeal. By late June, UK and European defence-tech startups had raised $12.3 billion in venture capital, almost double last year’s amount, according to PitchBook data.

This fits a wider trend: Tech Funding News has seen Quantum Systems close a $1.2 billion Series D at an $8 billion valuation with Blackstone, Expeditions raise a €197 million second fund backed by BAE Systems, and the UK government pledge £1.6 billion through 2030 to support the next major defence company.

Pyra isn’t the only European defence startup looking for a $200 million investment before launching. Destinus, an aerospace company that started in Switzerland and is now based in the Netherlands, is also trying to raise about €200 million at a €5 billion valuation as it gets ready to go public.

The main difference is that Destinus already has working hardware, while Pyra, according to its website, won’t launch anything before summer 2026.

The real issue isn’t just the amount

$200 million is a lot for a company without a product, but it’s not unusual in this market. It shows how much value investors place on strong founder stories.

The bigger question is whether investor interest will last when these pre-launch, reputation-driven companies have to deliver real results. Blair’s Skyral has government contracts to back its funding, but Pyra only has a placeholder website and a famous name for now.

Nick Blair is in talks to raise about $200 million for Pyra, a defence startup.
