The weekend is here, which means there’s no better time to get stuck into a good movie. And while streamers such as Netflix<\/a> and BBC iPlayer are always adding flicks, we can sometimes be a bit too spoilt for choice.<\/p>\n

Luckily, we’re on hand to pick through those that are worth your time, including an “excellent” indie gem starring Olivia Colman, and an action classic with Keanu Reeves.<\/p>\n

Here are five of the best, plus a few more to check out.<\/p>\n

Best movie new to Netflix this week<\/p>\n

Edge of Tomorrow: Sitting at a near-perfect score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, this 2014 movie was called “a brainy sci-fi that will keep you on the edge of your seat” by Spotlight on Film<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt lead the cast of the film, which takes place in a future in which Europe is occupied by an alien race, as a PR officer joins a landing operation against the extra-terrestrials, only to get stuck in a time loop.<\/p>\n

Co-written by Mission: Impossible’s Christopher McQuarrie, the movie also features Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson and Noah Taylor.<\/p>\n

Also new to Netflix this week: <\/strong>Venom: The Last Dance, Practical Magic, Gladiator II, The Suicide Squad<\/p>\n

Best movie new to Prime Video this week<\/p>\n

Joyride: Olivia Colman leads this Ireland-set movie, which comes from director Emer Reynolds.<\/p>\n

Described as an “an excellent Irish drama” by Common Sense Media<\/a>, the story follows a young boy called Mully (Charlie Reid) who runs away from his father and steals a taxi\u2026 only to find a woman named Joy (Colman) in the back with a baby, having decided to give the newborn away to a friend.<\/p>\n

Together, the unlikely duo go on a journey of discovery through Ireland, finding the friendship neither knew they needed.<\/p>\n

Also new to Prime Video this week: <\/strong>Twisters, Mother Mary, Saving Private Ryan, Shelter, Pride & Prejudice (2005), Moon, The Negotiator <\/p>\n

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week<\/p>\n

28 Days Later: If zombie apocalypses are your thing, then you can’t get much better with one of the best in the genre.<\/p>\n

Released in 2002, Danny Boyle’s movie focuses on a bicycle courier (Cillian Murphy) who wakes up from a coma to find that society has broken down due to a rage-inducing virus, before he crosses paths with a group of fellow survivors.<\/p>\n

Also starring Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston and Brendan Gleeson, the movie has since spawned a franchise with several sequels, the most recent of which, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, was released earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Also new to BBC iPlayer this week:<\/strong> Lady Macbeth, Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary, Hoard, Inside Llewyn Davis, Shaft (1971), Shaun the Sheep Movie, Spider-Man, Kindling <\/p>\n

Best movie new to ITVX this week<\/p>\n

John Wick: Chapter 2: Keanu Reeves returns as the titular hitman in this 2017 sequel, which boasts action and gore aplenty.<\/p>\n

In the follow-up, Wick hopes for a quiet retirement before he is reluctantly drawn back in when gangster Santino D’Antonio turns up, forcing him to repay a favour and fulfill an oath. As such, he must take out D’Antonio’s sister in Rome, who heads a crime syndicate.<\/p>\n

Boasting 89% on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, Deep Focus Review<\/a> said Chapter 2 “does exactly what [a] good sequel should: it replicates aspects of the original while also expanding its mythology through a measure of novelty and one-upmanship”. <\/p>\n

Also new to ITVX this week: <\/strong>The Spy Who Loved Me, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Reawakening<\/p>\n

Best movie new to Channel 4 this week<\/p>\n

See How They Run: Released in 2022, this murder mystery boasts an impressive ensemble including Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, Ruth Wilson, Adrien Brody, Harris Dickinson, David Oyelowo and Reece Shearsmith.<\/p>\n

The story follows the murder of a film crew member, who was working on an adaptation of a hit stage play. As such, an inspector and a rookie are put on the case, which takes them to the underbelly of London’s West End in the 1950s.<\/p>\n

Frequently compared to Knives Out by critics, the Irish Times<\/a> said it “crackles with invention and high spirits”.<\/p>\n
