{"id":114765,"date":"2025-05-19T16:24:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T16:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/114765\/"},"modified":"2025-05-19T16:24:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T16:24:09","slug":"the-uk-and-the-eu-hail-a-new-chapter-as-they-ink-fresh-deals-5-years-after-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/114765\/","title":{"rendered":"The UK and the EU hail a new chapter as they ink fresh deals, 5 years after Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Britain and the European Union hailed a new chapter in their relationship Monday after sealing fresh agreements on defense cooperation and easing trade flows at their first formal summit since Brexit. <\/p>\n<p>Five years after the U.K. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brexit-ap-top-news-london-boris-johnson-international-news-e48bf51838ced94e2d92adba189b4944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left the EU<\/a>, ties were growing closer again as Prime Minister Keir Starmer met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other senior EU officials in London for talks. <\/p>\n<p>The deals will slash red tape, grow the British economy and reset relations with the 27-nation trade bloc, Starmer said, while von der Leyen called the talks a \u201chistoric moment\u201d that benefits both sides. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBritain is back on the world stage,\u201d Starmer told reporters. \u201cThis deal is a win-win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hailed Monday\u2019s agreements \u2014 the third package of trade deals struck by his government in as many weeks following accords <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-uk-trump-starmer-trade-deal-79d55b8ade0dd8c9265ada9400d079db\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with the U.S.<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uk-india-trade-deal-starmer-modi-6cbaf787f49a08aac18f93b2601d09f2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India<\/a> \u2014 as \u201cgood for jobs, good for bills and good for our borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Britain\u2019s opposition parties slammed the deals as backtracking on Brexit and \u201csurrendering\u201d anew to the EU. \u201cWe\u2019re becoming a rule-taker from Brussels once again,\u201d Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the main takeaways from the summit:<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Cutting red tape on food trade<\/p>\n<p>Officials said they will remove some routine border checks on animal and plant products and align with EU regulations, which will reduce costs on food imports and exports and make it easier for goods to flow freely across borders.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses have complained about trucks waiting for hours at borders with fresh food that cannot be exported to the EU because of laborious post-Brexit certifications.<\/p>\n<p>The changes will mean the U.K. can sell products like raw British burgers, sausages and seafood to the EU again, officials said. The benefits will apply also to movements between the British mainland and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/british-politics-united-kingdom-government-european-union-0552e9210a850c56a13c0fbb63cd6640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Ireland,<\/a> where post-Brexit customs checks have been a thorny issue for years.<\/p>\n<p>While the EU is the U.K.\u2019s largest trading partner, the government said the U.K. has been hit with a 21% drop in exports since Brexit because of more onerous paperwork and other non-tariff barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Defense procurement pact<\/p>\n<p>A new security and defense partnership will pave the way for U.K. defense firms to access a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-defense-ukraine-russia-us-military-spending-dbc6133a2412ec02adf87078f2f2f5cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new EU loan program<\/a> worth 150 billion euros ($170 billion.) That will allow Britain to secure cheap loans backed by the EU budget to buy military equipment, in part to help Ukraine defend itself.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has said that the loan program will help boost the readiness of European defense as well as enable more coordinated support for Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Fisheries<\/p>\n<p>The deal included a 12-year extension of an agreement allowing EU fishing vessels to operate in U.K. waters until 2038, which angered U.K. fishermen and their supporters.<\/p>\n<p>While economically minor, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brexit-europe-london-global-trade-europe-b9022a3900ad8e9f5c4fec730b92db8a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fishing has long been a sticking point<\/a> and symbolically important issue for the U.K. and EU member states such as France. Disputes over the issue nearly derailed a Brexit deal back in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Elspeth Macdonald, head of the Scottish Fishermen\u2019s Federation, called the agreement a \u201chorror show for Scottish fishermen\u201d that was granted in order to secure other objectives. Scottish First Minister John Swinney said the deal was \u201cthe direct opposite of what was promised by Brexit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Easing movement for young people<\/p>\n<p>Post-Brexit visa restrictions have hobbled cross-border activities for professionals such as bankers or lawyers, as well as academic and cultural exchanges, including <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brexit-business-europe-global-trade-music-ab93af784e8ad80361e4067bcd3bd737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">touring bands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. and EU said they agreed to co-operate on a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eu-uk-brexit-youth-mobility-studies-7f90241f2014bb3d955a0e8a87b2f012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youth mobility plan<\/a> that\u2019s expected to allow young Britons and Europeans to live and work temporarily in each other\u2019s territory, though no details were provided.<\/p>\n<p>British officials insisted that numbers would be capped and stays would be time-limited.<\/p>\n<p>The free movement of people remains a politically touchy issue in the U.K., with the youth mobility plan seen by some Brexiteers as inching back toward completely free movement for EU nationals to move to the U.K. The U.K. has similar youth mobility arrangements with countries including Australia and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Cutting airport waits <\/p>\n<p>British passport holders will be able to use e-gates at more European airports as part of the deal. <\/p>\n<p>Since Brexit, many British travelers cannot use automated gates when they arrive at EU airports. The new measure will end \u201cthe dreaded queues at border control,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition objects to a \u2018surrender\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s opposition parties have criticized Starmer\u2019s bid to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eu-britain-uk-brexit-starmer-leyen-brussels-0936054bb4cf4991534a1ce437643a58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reset relations with the EU<\/a>.
