I\u2019m honestly not entirely sure \u2013 it looks pretty good and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/features\/round-up-marvels-wolverine-sounds-like-another-great-superhero-blockbuster-in-ps5-previews\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the first round of previews have largely matched that sentiment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But social media is awash with absolutely brutal commentary right now. And predictably, it\u2019s not of the constructive kind.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" align=\"center\"><p>God tier slander <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vhBLDMrkky\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/vhBLDMrkky<\/a>\u2014 Le\u00f3n. (@fromfireforged) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fromfireforged\/status\/2088072473812046058?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">August 14, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fromfireforged\/status\/2088072473812046058\" rel=\"nofollow\">One video<\/a>, first posted in Spanish to 50k likes, and then amplified in English with the caption \u201cGod tier slander\u201d for 70k more likes, compares footage of the new PS5 exclusive\u2019s Sentinel boss battle to a sequence in PS2 game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/psp\/ben_10_protector_of_earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ben 10: Protector of Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, the Wolverine fight is not especially original, as a similar sequence has featured in various games, including all-time classics like the opening of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps2\/god_of_war_ii\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">God of War 2<\/a>, where Kratos dukes it out with the Colossus of Rhodes. Hardly the end of the world.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" align=\"center\"><p>Wolverine&#8217;s gameplay experience feels like that: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/D6ZZ5tHfsj\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/D6ZZ5tHfsj<\/a>\u2014 Diego SousaByte (@diegosousabyte) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/diegosousabyte\/status\/2088233170843939098?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">August 14, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/diegosousabyte\/status\/2088233170843939098\" rel=\"nofollow\">Another video<\/a>, with 20k likes, shows 15 seconds of footage of Logan running forward while someone holds a DualSense in front of the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWolverine\u2019s gameplay feels like that,\u201d the caption reads, as the clip clearly shows the individual holding the up button on the analogue stick.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" align=\"center\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Eho98Lg0jE\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/Eho98Lg0jE<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gzqCb9Qf2p\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/gzqCb9Qf2p<\/a>\u2014 Raxyz (@Raxyz0) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Raxyz0\/status\/2088001968857883083?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">August 13, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a similarly reductive attempt at humour, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Raxyz0\/status\/2088001968857883083\" rel=\"nofollow\">a further clip<\/a> with 42k likes overlays controller inputs on top of gameplay footage, with the player mashing R2 throughout. Who knew you needed to push buttons to play games?<\/p>\n<p>I think all of these gags are trying to present the game as unoriginal and outdated with rote gameplay. I find all of them irksome, to be honest.<\/p>\n<p>And it seems like it\u2019s getting under Insomniac\u2019s skin a little bit, too.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" align=\"center\"><p>I think the wild way this algorithm amplifies and forces negativity upon you has me reconsidering my philosophy on telling devs to look or post here.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a relentless onslaught that I cannot believe is good for anyone\u2019s mental health nor representative.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 James Stevenson (@JamesStevenson) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JamesStevenson\/status\/2088279662564708781?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">August 14, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Veteran communications director James Stevenson wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JamesStevenson\/status\/2088279662564708781\" rel=\"nofollow\">X<\/a> (or <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JamesStevenson\/status\/2088279662564708781\" rel=\"nofollow\">Twitter<\/a>) that \u201cthe wild way\u201d social media\u2019s \u201calgorithm amplifies and forces negativity upon you has me reconsidering my philosophy on telling devs to look or post here\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a relentless onslaught that I cannot believe is good for anyone\u2019s mental health nor representative.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, what is happening here?<\/p>\n<p>Well, I think this goes way beyond constructive criticism at this stage \u2013 there\u2019s something much deeper at play.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that Marvel\u2019s Wolverine is going to be an adequate superhero adventure at its absolute worst, but these social media posts are attempting to frame it as a potential disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Well, I think broadly speaking social media is intensely dissatisfied with PlayStation this generation, and Insomniac is taking the heat right now.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a growing sentiment that Sony\u2019s style of cinematic action game is getting stale, and whether or not you agree with that, I suspect some of that feeling is being used to completely misrepresent and undermine Marvel\u2019s Wolverine here.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, there\u2019s also still anger at PlayStation\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/news\/2026\/08\/disc-based-ps5s-now-warn-buyers-about-the-impending-death-of-physical-games\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stop manufacturing physical games<\/a>, and I think this style of humour is an attempt to downplay one of the platform holder\u2019s biggest games of the year.<\/p>\n<p>A quick look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/store.playstation.com\/en-us\/pages\/latest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>PS Store\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> best-sellers list suggests none of this is having an impact, of course: it\u2019s currently the third most pre-ordered game in the US, behind only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/grand_theft_auto_6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GTA 6<\/a> and two versions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/games\/ps5\/nba_2k27\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA 2K27<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I personally don\u2019t expect Marvel\u2019s Wolverine to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pushsquare.com\/tags\/game-of-the-year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Game of the Year<\/strong><\/a> contender in a crowded 2026 field.
