The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, on the other hand, would fail to meet the threshold, with 3% of votes.

Three state elections are due to take place in September. Saxony-Anhalt kicks things off on September 6, followed by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin on September 20. The AfD is set to see record gains. In Saxony-Anhalt, the party could even gain an unprecedented absolute majority, allowing it to enter a state government for the first time.

INSA surveyed 1,203 people from August 10 to 14. The institute put the margin of error at plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

<img alt="FILE PHOTO - The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) logo is seen at the CDU federal headquarters (Konrad-Adenauer-Haus).
