Nothing can prepare an actor for the attention that comes with becoming a Hollywood star, especially when that rise happens almost overnight, as it did for Keira Knightley<\/a> in the 2000s.<\/p>\n Throughout her teenage years, Knightley was constantly on a film set, and in 2002, she broke out with Bend It Like Beckham. Suddenly, the industry was taking notice of her talent, and she was being eyed for a major Hollywood role, which transformed her life forever.<\/p>\n While Bend It Like Beckham was a success, it didn\u2019t make Knightley an A-lister. Instead, that came in 2003, when she appeared as the feisty Elizabeth Swann in the box office juggernaut Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. However, due to the wealth of acting experience she\u2019d already accrued, it\u2019s easy to forget she was just 18.<\/p>\n At the time that all her friends were setting off to begin university, Knightley was a household name across the world and at the forefront of a cash-printing franchise. Without having time to take her foot off the pedal, she appeared in the second and third instalments of the franchise but also excelled in literary period dramas like Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and Silk. <\/p>\n Due to the versatility she\u2019d shown, Knightley, by the age of 21, was both a bankable Hollywood star and a critically acclaimed actor. However, just when she reached the heights of the industry, her roles became fewer, and the movies she appeared in became lower budget and more niche. <\/p>\n In 2011, she appeared in a David Cronenberg historical drama<\/a> about the dawn of psychoanalysis called A Dangerous Method. A year later, she appeared in an apocalyptic rom-com directed by Lorene Scafaria called Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. A year after that, she appeared in Begin Again, a musical helmed by Once director John Carney, in which she plays a promising young musician.\u00a0<\/p>\n However, the reason for this wasn\u2019t due to Knightley being blacklisted from Hollywood<\/a>. Instead, she knew that it was best to put herself first, and it was necessary to take this break for her long-term future.<\/p>\n Further reading: Cutting Room Floor<\/strong><\/p>\n Speaking to Variety in 2018, she revealed that her retreat from the Hollywood mainstream wasn\u2019t just about her career goals; it was about how the fame she achieved as a teenager with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies had affected her. <\/p>\n \u201cI found it pretty horrific,\u201d she said<\/a> of her sudden stardom. \u201cI\u2019m not an extrovert, so I found that level of scrutiny and that level of fame really hard. It was an age where you are becoming, you haven\u2019t become, and you need to make mistakes. It\u2019s a very precarious age, particularly for women. You\u2019re in some ways still a child.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, Knightley can see the silver linings in how it all played out, but did concede, \u201cIt was traumatic, but it set up the rest of my career.\u201d<\/p>\n With that in mind, she added, \u201cSo, looking back, would I do anything different? No, I wouldn\u2019t because I\u2019m unbelievably lucky now, and my career is in a place where I really enjoy it, and I have a level of fame that\u2019s much less intense. I can deal with it now, and that\u2019s great. But at the time, it was not so great, and took many years of therapy to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n Thankfully, if Knightley were cast in Pirates of the Caribbean at 18 today, it may be a different story. However, in 2003, this was in a pre-Leveson world, when tabloid invasion was at its peak. In 2012, she even speculated to The Independent<\/a> that her phone was hacked, stating, \u201cI would be very surprised if I hadn\u2019t been\u2026 but, yes, I think lines were completely and utterly exploded.\u201d<\/p>\n Her story about the impact of fame at a young age isn\u2019t an anomaly either.<\/p>\n Similarly, Kristen Stewart has avoided mainstream blockbusters since her stint in the Twilight saga, and Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood have gone out of their way<\/a> to find unusual projects in the wake of their roles in Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n Rather than allow the industry to swallow her up, Knightley returned from her break by giving career-defining performances in the 2018 historical biopic Colette and the 2019 drama Official Secrets. Although she\u2019s still selective<\/a> about what roles she chooses to take on and has avoided franchises like the plague, most importantly, Knightley is doing it on her own terms.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
