\n Leeds’ most dazzling event is back <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Light Night Leeds has announced some changes to this year’s glittering light festival, along with an exciting new theme. <\/strong><\/p>\n

For the first time in its history, the beloved, free light trail will take place during half term, making it more accessible than ever to families across West Yorkshire. <\/p>\n

The streets will be filled with projections, immersive artworks, and light installations across two nights – 28 and 29 October. <\/p>\n

Happily, that also means it will fall a week after the clocks have gone back, which means the full programme can benefit from the darker evenings and begin from 6pm. <\/p>\n

Leeds City Council has now revealed the theme for its 2026 edition of Light Night, which will be centred around tales of the city’s past and future. <\/p>\n

With the theme ‘A City Speaks\u2026’, this year’s Light Night will form part of Leeds 400, marking 400 years since Leeds was granted its first Royal Charter by King Charles I. <\/p>\n

Contemporary art installations like performances and projections across city landmarks will explore the stories, people and places that have shaped Leeds over the past four centuries.<\/p>\n

Familiar streets and buildings will be totally transformed for two very special evenings, with more than 40 artworks to discover. <\/p>\n

Last year, Light Night Leeds attracted more than 200,000 visitors to the city. <\/p>\n

The full programme for 2026 is set to be announced at the end of September.<\/p>\n

Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council\u2019s deputy leader and executive member for economy, said: “Light Night Leeds really shows off our city in the best light each year, bringing thousands of people together to enjoy hugely impressive projections and immersive experiences.<\/p>\n

“The event is so important for the city, helping to establish Leeds as a cultural destination while making art accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n

“The move into October half term, when the evenings are darker and children are off school, will make it easier for even more families to experience everything Light Night Leeds has to offer.<\/p>\n

“It’s wonderful to see an event that has been such an important part of Leeds since 2005 also play a key role in the Leeds 400 celebrations, using contemporary creativity to explore our past while looking towards our future.”<\/p>\n

Light Night Leeds 2026 takes place on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October, from 6pm to 9.30pm.<\/p>\n

Ryanair to be investigated for over charging parents to sit with their children<\/p>\n

Ryanair is being investigated by the Government\u2019s leading regulator over charging parents to sit with their children.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently, Ryanair \u2019s terms and conditions require at least one parent to sit with their children aged two-11 when they fly, but this is done through what the airline calls a \u2018mandatory family seat\u2019, meaning the parent must pay in order for them to secure a seat next to their child.<\/p>\n

This fee applies to both outbound and return flights, and typically costs around \u00a38 each way \u2013 but for all other passengers, reserving a seat is optional.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s this that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation .<\/p>\n

CMA evidence suggests this approach to seating is used across the majority of Ryanair\u2019s UK routes, and the watchdog understands that Ryanair is the only major airline flying out of the UK to impose this charge.<\/p>\n

Other airlines offer to seat children with a parent or guardian without the need for a paid-for adult seat reservation, or they allocate seats together automatically during booking for free.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The CMA says it\u2019s investigating, in particular, whether Ryanair\u2019s approach to seat reservations may mean parents are being charged for the airline to meet its child safety and disability\u2011related obligations as set out under aviation rules.<\/p>\n

The watchdog wants to determine whether or not this practice is in line with consumer law, and whether the airline\u2019s contract terms are \u2018unfair\u2019 if they put customers at an unfair disadvantage.<\/p>\n

Under consumer law,\u00a0businesses\u00a0must show a total price that includes all unavoidable charges, rather than adding extra charges separately or later in the process, as this ensures consumers can effectively compare prices and understand the true cost of what they are buying.<\/p>\n

\u201cLots of families save up to afford a summer holiday and we know that\u00a0extra charges can quickly bump up the price,\u201d commented Hayley Fletcher, who is the Senior Director of Consumer Protection at the CMA.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur investigation will consider Ryanair\u2019s approach to family seat reservations and how the cost is presented to consumers to determine whether they comply with consumer law.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past year, we\u2019ve told\u00a0businesses to ensure their customers are shown the total price upfront\u00a0\u2013 those who don\u2019t face the very real possibility of action from the CMA.\u201d<\/p>\n

At present, the CMA is currently at the beginning of its investigation, and has reached no conclusions about whether Ryanair has broken the law.<\/p>\n
