Airbnb (via supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"category\">Travel &amp; Tourism<\/p>\n<p>              Ryanair to be investigated for over charging parents to sit with their children<\/p>\n<p>                  <a class=\"mb-4\" href=\"https:\/\/thehootleeds.com\/author\/emily\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/c6521570b62af6ad478c307cd4ae55b5b405e5130de6e785af80b637d76370d5.jpeg\" width=\"40\" height=\"40\" class=\"avatar rounded-circle\" alt=\"Emily Sergeant\"\/><br \/>\n                    Emily Sergeant<br \/>\n                  <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryanair is being investigated by the Government\u2019s leading regulator over charging parents to sit with their children.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, Ryanair \u2019s terms and conditions require at least one parent to sit with their children aged two-11 when they fly, but this is done through what the airline calls a \u2018mandatory family seat\u2019, meaning the parent must pay in order for them to secure a seat next to their child.<\/p>\n<p>This fee applies to both outbound and return flights, and typically costs around \u00a38 each way \u2013 but for all other passengers, reserving a seat is optional.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s this that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation .<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gerrie-van-der-walt-uOc3ldMSAiY-unsplash-2048x1365.jpg-1600x1066.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-276231\"\/>Ryanair is being investigated over charging parents to sit with their children \/ Credit: Gerrie van der Walt (via Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p>CMA evidence suggests this approach to seating is used across the majority of Ryanair\u2019s UK routes, and the watchdog understands that Ryanair is the only major airline flying out of the UK to impose this charge.<\/p>\n<p>Other airlines offer to seat children with a parent or guardian without the need for a paid-for adult seat reservation, or they allocate seats together automatically during booking for free.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CMA says it\u2019s investigating, in particular, whether Ryanair\u2019s approach to seat reservations may mean parents are being charged for the airline to meet its child safety and disability\u2011related obligations as set out under aviation rules.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog wants to determine whether or not this practice is in line with consumer law, and whether the airline\u2019s contract terms are \u2018unfair\u2019 if they put customers at an unfair disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p>Under consumer law,\u00a0businesses\u00a0must show a total price that includes all unavoidable charges, rather than adding extra charges separately or later in the process, as this ensures consumers can effectively compare prices and understand the true cost of what they are buying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots of families save up to afford a summer holiday and we know that\u00a0extra charges can quickly bump up the price,\u201d commented Hayley Fletcher, who is the Senior Director of Consumer Protection at the CMA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur investigation will consider Ryanair\u2019s approach to family seat reservations and how the cost is presented to consumers to determine whether they comply with consumer law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the past year, we\u2019ve told\u00a0businesses to ensure their customers are shown the total price upfront\u00a0\u2013 those who don\u2019t face the very real possibility of action from the CMA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At present, the CMA is currently at the beginning of its investigation, and has reached no conclusions about whether Ryanair has broken the law.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehootleeds.com\/leeds\/much-loved-leeds-smokehouse-to-takeover-village-butchers-shop-in-farsley\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Read more: <\/strong>Much loved Leeds smokehouse to take over village butcher\u2019s shop in Farsley<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Featured Image \u2013 CCNull<\/p>\n<p>      <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Travel &amp;
