Spider-Man: Brand New Day — $70 million
2. The Odyssey — $23.2 million
3. The End of Oak Street — $21 million
4. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie — $20.5 million
5. Katseye: Wild Hearts — $4 million

Original story, Aug. 13:

Dinosaurs are taking over multiplexes this weekend, but they won’t be taking the No. 1 spot from Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sony and Marvel’s blockbuster is set for a third consecutive weekend atop the box office, even as Warner Bros.’ The End of Oak Street arrives as the biggest new movie and Paramount’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie counter-programs for families.

Brand New Day crossed $700 million domestically this week, becoming just the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe release to hit that mark, joining Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Black Panther. This weekend’s projected $65 million to $75 million take should also push the film past Top Gun: Maverick and into the all-time domestic top five, while its worldwide total climbs toward $2 billion — a threshold only seven movies in history have crossed, and one no film has reached since Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022.

The End of Oak Street, a dinosaur-survival thriller from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell, stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as parents whose suburban neighborhood gets swept into a prehistoric wilderness. Reviews have landed strong — north of 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes — and the film is projected to open in the $20 million-plus range, with estimates running from a conservative $18 million to $23 million up toward the high $20 millions.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, the third theatrical outing for Paramount and Spin Master’s preschool franchise, is projected for a high-teens to $20 million domestic opening — on top of the roughly $25 million it’s already earned overseas. Some forecasts even have it edging out Oak Street for the runner-up spot behind Spider-Man.

In the No. 4 spot is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, expected to add $16 million to $20 million in its fifth weekend. The film is on track to cross $500 million domestically in the next few days, which would make it just the second movie of Nolan’s career — after The Dark Knight — to reach that milestone.

Rounding out the projected top five is Six: The Musical, a filmed production of the Tony-winning pop retelling of Henry VIII’s wives. Playing in just a handful of theaters, it needs only $2 million to $3.5 million to break through.

Three more titles open in narrower release this weekend. Angel Studios’ The Brink of War, starring Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan during the 1986 Reykjavik Summit, expands into roughly 2,000 theaters. Black Bear’s The Rivals of Amziah King, a bluegrass-scored crime drama marking Matthew McConaughey’s first big-screen role since 2020, opens on about 500 screens. And Neon’s stoner comedy The Wrong Girls, led by Kristen Stewart, lands in a similar-sized release. All three are expected to debut in the low single digits, landing outside the weekend’s top five.

Here are Gold Derby’s predicted box-office rankings for the top five over the Aug. 14-16 weekend:

1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day — $70 million
2. The End of Oak Street — $25 million
3. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie — $23 million
4. The Odyssey — $17 million
5.
