and Crematorium(Image: Google Maps)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The four aging gas cremators at Canford cemetery in north Bristol \u2013 the city council\u2019s \u201csingle highest emitter of carbon\u201d \u2013 will be replaced with electric versions in a \u00a3350,000 project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/democracy.bristol.gov.uk\/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=2607&amp;LLL=0\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">senior officer decision<\/a> posted on the authority\u2019s website said the burners were 40 years old \u2013 10 years more than their typical lifespan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It said that although the machines were legally compliant, an expected change in regulations over flue gas mercury levels would mean they were not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The report said: \u201cThe change from gas to lower carbon electric cremators and the installation of modern filtration equipment will require alterations to the existing crematoria building and energy supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe initial phase of this project involves conducting site surveys and designing the required structural, mechanical, and electrical alterations to the building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis phase will also address issues such as planning consent, contractor procurement, risk management and develop this report is to record the decision to allocate a budget of \u00a3350k to complete this design and development work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It said that because the project had a \u201csignificant decarbonisation component\u201d, the design and development of the scheme would be done by <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/council-chiefs-reassured-over-fears-10074562\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">City Leap<\/a>, the council\u2019s 20-year partnership with private company Ameresco to deliver low carbon energy infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The decision report, by executive director for growth and regeneration John Smith, said money to pay for it would come from the council\u2019s decarbonisation fund while it could also receive government cash from a grant programme to reduce public authorities\u2019 CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It said: \u201cCanford\u2019s four gas cremators are approximately 40 years old, with cremators typically requiring full replacement after 30 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cCanford Crematorium is <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a>\u2019s single highest emitter of carbon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cNew electric cremators will help to meet the council\u2019s carbon reduction targets and reduce energy costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe current cremators are not fitted with flue gas mercury abatement (filtration) equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAlthough currently compliant, an anticipated change to regulations is expected which will mandate 100 per cent mercury abatement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cRevenue generated by the crematoria supports the wider council cemeteries and parks operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh
