President Donald Trump posted an image of a map declaring the Strait of Hormuz a \u201cnew U.S. territory\u201d on Tuesday, hours after Iran said the key shipping route would remain closed after a 60-day negotiating period with the U.S. expired<\/a> without a deal in place.<\/p>\n The president labeled the Strait a new territory in an image of a map posted on Truth Social.<\/p>\n Getty ImagesKey Facts<\/p>\n Trump posted an image of the Strait on Truth Social on Tuesday morning, circling the waterway that separates Iran from parts of Oman the United Arab Emirates\u2014labeling it a \u201cnew U.S. territory\u201d without any other context.<\/p>\n Trump has made similar statements multiple times in recent days\u2014making the same declaration<\/a> in a speech to police officers on Long Island on Friday, and telling reporters<\/a> at the White House \u201cI just think it\u2019s a great idea\u201d on Monday.<\/p>\n In a post on X<\/a> in Persian, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi called Trump\u2019s map a \u201cdelusion\u201d and the president a \u201cdeluded man,\u201d and threatened this particular delusion will be \u201ccorrected.\u201d<\/p>\n News Peg<\/p>\n Trump posted the map hours after Iranian leaders said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed<\/a> until the U.S. gave up several key concessions in negotiations. These include lifting the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports, releasing Iranian frozen assets, removing oil sanctions and ending military operations \u201con all fronts,\u201d according to remarks<\/a> from Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Shortly after posting the map, Trump insisted in a new post<\/a> there were \u201cno talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,\u201d insisting that the Strait was now \u201copen and operating\u201d and \u201call water mines have been removed or detonated.\u201d<\/p>\n Crucial Quote<\/p>\n \u201cI like the idea of declaring it a territory,\u201d Trump told reporters<\/a> on Monday. \u201cWe have total control over the Strait.
