<a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> and robotics, a key US congressional advisory body has said.In a report published on Tuesday, the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/us-china-economic-and-security-review-commission?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC)<\/a> warned that the US risks ceding global leadership in setting global data standards to China, which would give Chinese firms an advantage over their US counterparts in industries where data is a central pillar of development.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cStandards are difficult to revise once adopted,\u201d the report said. \u201cEngaging now would be more effective than seeking to unwind an established standard later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Beijing designated data as a key factor of production, elevating the resource to a core strategic asset at the centre of the country\u2019s <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/chinas-economic-recovery?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">economic<\/a>, industrial and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/china-military?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">military<\/a> development.Since then, China\u2019s data economy has begun to \u201cflourish\u201d through the establishment of thousands of data exchanges nationwide and the introduction of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/policy\/article\/3356498\/global-ai-data-shortage-looming-china-boosts-its-own-supply?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\"
