If ever you needed to find a definition of the all-American disposition, The Band<\/a> were, ironically, perhaps about as close as you could get.\u00a0<\/p>\n The power of roots rock and their passions shone through in everything they ever did, ranging from turning Bob Dylan into an electric dynasty<\/a> to cultivating their own sense of musical freedom. There was no mistaking where The Band were ever from. They swung that star-spangled banner loudly and proudly.\u00a0<\/p>\n That obviously slightly glosses over the fact that The Rockers were actually Canadian; however, the deeply embedded way that they took flight from the heart of genres like Americana spoke volumes about the type of music they set out to create. It was both traditional and futuristic, honouring the past while always having an eye forward to the world that was coming along next.<\/p>\n Yet when they found themselves rolling into the Deep South of America in the late 1960s, no one could ever mistake the mark of what they were surrounded by. As Robbie Robertson put it, \u201cI liked being in a place that had rhythm in the air. I thought, \u2018No wonder they invented rock and roll here. Everything sounds like music.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n That was the spark that started \u2018The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down\u2019, but in actual fact, by the time it came round to recording it, there were also imposing inspirations of a very different kind. This was owed, in no small part, to the fact that they made the song inside a Hollywood Hills<\/a> bathroom that once belonged to none other than Sammy Davis Jr.\u00a0<\/p>\n Yes, it sounded strange, but in fact the poolhouse owned by Mr Entertainment actually served as the perfect haven for The Band as they set about creating what would eventually form their iconic Brown Album. Converting the whole house into a ramshackle recording studio, as many people can attest to, the bathroom transformed into the ideal echo chamber. <\/p>\n The problem was that Capitol, the record label, were taking so long to deliver the equipment that The Band needed to create their album, and in the eyes of Robertson, they had no time to lose. So they picked up a standard piano from a shop in town, thrifted a set of drums from a pawn shop, and left the rest of the technical kit to do the work when it finally arrived. <\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2018The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down\u2019 was plainly a story of Southern pain, worlds away from Canada, or indeed a poolhouse in the Hollywood Hills. The aftermath of the American Civil War was long gone by that point in 1969, but it was testament to The Band that they could reach into those roots and traditions<\/a>, and make the plight as real as it ever was.\u00a0<\/p>\n Having a slice of old-school Hollywood entertainment thrown in there for good measure probably wasn\u2019t the original plan, but it served as a cool anecdote nonetheless whenever The Band really wanted to prove their credentials. Americana, civil war, and Sammy Davis Jr? They could span the breadth of it all. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
