Four months ago, when Chris Wilder sifted through the detritus of an underwhelming season and drafted the rehabilitation programme he believed would coax Sheffield United<\/a> back to rude health, certainty and stability were the two key themes.<\/p>\n

As the club he manages and has supported since childhood considers the very real possibility of a points deduction and potentially even worse following Wednesday\u2019s events at the High Court, it is fair to say this is not the summer the 58-year-old envisaged. <\/p>\n

Rather, after devising a strategy he believed could deliver promotion<\/a> despite the loss of Premier League parachute payments, the last 48 hours have been the stuff of nightmares.<\/p>\n

Wilder, a master at turning a pig\u2019s ear<\/a> into a silk purse, is adept at delivering big results on modest budgets and insulating over-performing squads from boardroom chaos. Seven years ago, during the first of his three spells in charge of United, he negotiated safe passage through a bitter dispute between then co-owners Kevin McCabe and Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and steered the likes of Chris Basham, Lys Mousset and Leon Clarke to a ninth placed top-flight finish.<\/p>\n

But this week\u2019s court battle, which saw Prince Abdullah\u2019s company United World secure a winding up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited (CSBL) \u2013 the vehicle Helmy Eltoukhy and Steven Rosen used to purchase United from the Saudi in December 2024 \u2013 threatens to inflict even more damage on a team which has grown increasingly directionless under the American\u2019s stewardship.<\/p>\n

The English Football League and independent football regulator must now investigate whether Eltoukhy and Rosen\u2019s decision to transfer CSBL\u2019s shareholding in United to a brand new corporate entity \u2013 1919 Partners LLC \u2013 represented an attempt to avoid paying \u00a335m Prince Abdullah\u2019s firm is still owed following the current owner\u2019s takeover whilst retaining control at Bramall Lane. <\/p>\n

Will the Blades get a points deduction? <\/p>\n

If the answer is yes, then a 12-point penalty deduction could be imposed. Something which is unlikely to foster trust between Wilder and his employers or endear them to an increasingly sceptical support base.<\/p>\n

There are parallels with Southampton, who were docked 10 points in 2009 when their parent company went into liquidation. The EFL need to be convinced the manoeuvre involving 1919 Partners did not break its regulations. It is also investigating whether CSBL\u2019s fate counts as an \u201cinsolvency event\u201d which, having been director of a firm which went bust less than a decade ago, could have serious ramifications for Rosen.<\/p>\n

Throughout an episode one financial expert last night described as a \u201csorry mess\u201d, Eltoukhy and Rosen have continued to insist that day to day operations at United remain unaffected. The only trouble is, as most fans will tell you, nothing could seem further from the truth. Gus Hamer, United\u2019s most gifted performer, has been sold back to Coventry City. <\/p>\n

The smattering of fresh talent Wilder has been able to acquire do not inspire confidence they can challenge for promotion. And, before divesting itself of its interests in United, CSBL presided over a period of chaos. Having led a side which started the campaign on minus two points into the play-off final \u2013 United World had failed to keep up with transfer repayments before offloading their shares in a \u00a3100m plus deal \u2013 Wilder was duly sacked before being rehired months later is. <\/p>\n

A much-heralded AI inspired recruitment model also proved a mistake. And, as Wilder later intimated after returning to the helm, a very expensive one at that.<\/p>\n

What now? <\/p>\n

It has been an open secret in South Yorkshire for some time that Eltoukhy and Rosen are searching for new investors, with a sports executive and consultant who has previously held positions at City, Aston Villa<\/a> and Liverpool thought to have been approached for advice. The feeling, among many members of South Yorkshire\u2019s business community at least, is that United\u2019s owners gambled on purchasing a club destined for the Premier League and, following a heartbreaking defeat to Sunderland at Wembley, lost.<\/p>\n

One thing which has worked to Wilder\u2019s advantage since United began to unravel is the amount of control he has been afforded. With his employers\u2019 time increasingly being taken up by legal matters, the former Northampton Town, Halifax and Middlesbrough chief probably enjoys greater influence over United\u2019s footballing operations than at any time since relations between McCabe and Prince Abdullah soured. <\/p>\n

The trouble is, events off the pitch are constricting that power. And, as one source told The i Paper last night, key figures in United\u2019s dressing room are only too aware of the consequences the EFL\u2019s probe could have on their hopes of going up. On top of Hamer\u2019s exit, and the suggestion his replacement will almost certainly be sourced in the loan market, that is not conducive to a positive mood.<\/p>\n

When Prince Abdullah won his wrangle with McCabe in 2019, United issued a statement saying this \u201cbrings an end to the uncertainty over Sheffield United\u2019s future ownership and allows us to focus our full attention on the season ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
