Russian President, Vladimir Putin has visited the newly unearthed remains of medieval Russian prince.<\/p>\n

Putin visited \u200bthe open sarcophagus of medieval warrior prince Dmitry Donskoy on Thursday. The remains were recently uncovered during restoration work at Moscow’s Cathedral of the Archangel.<\/p>\n

Lying within \u2060the Kremlin fortress, the Orthodox cathedral served as the burial site for more than 40 Russian tsars and princes down the centuries.<\/p>\n

The body of Grand Prince Donskoy was known \u2060to lie there, but its \u200bdiscovery \u2060last month in a crypt by the southern wall surprised historians, who had believed it \u2060was located elsewhere in the building.<\/p>\n

Putin lit a candle \u200binside \u2060the frescoed cathedral and \u200cstood beside the white-stone sarcophagus as experts explained how they had identified the remains as those of the \u200c14th-century prince, RIA news agency reported. The Russian \u200cOrthodox Church announced the discovery on Tuesday, saying the well-preserved remains were nearly complete and belonged to a man of just \u2060under 180 cm (5 feet 11 inches), who had died of natural causes between the ages of 35 and 45.<\/p>\n

“All these characteristics correspond with written sources and historical testimony concerning the life and death of the grand prince,” it said.<\/p>\n

Donskoy, who died in 1389 aged \u200c39, ruled the principalities of Muscovy and Vladimir, \u200bwhich would later become the core of the \u200cRussian state.<\/p>\n

A prominent figure \u2060in Russian history, Donskoy oversaw the construction of \u2060the first stone Kremlin fortress, increased the territory of Muscovy, and \u200crouted forces of \u200bthe Mongol horde in \u200ca famous battle near the \u200bDon river in 1380.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, The \u200bKremlin said on Thursday there is no information yet on a \u2060possible visit to Moscow by U.S. presidential envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.<\/p>\n

Negotiations \u2060between Russia \u200band \u2060the United States to bring about an \u2060end to the conflict \u200bin \u2060Ukraine have \u200clargely stalled amid the war in Iran, which Witkoff \u200cand Kushner are \u200calso working to end.<\/p>\n

Separately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said \u2060there was no planned meeting yet between President Vladimir Putin and a Vatican envoy, Paul Richard Gallagher, who will visit Moscow next week.<\/p>\n
