{"id":1159772,"date":"2026-08-20T18:39:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T18:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1159772\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T18:39:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T18:39:33","slug":"spain-to-care-for-lone-migrant-children-as-eu-commission-joins-far-right-calls-to-send-them-back-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1159772\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain to care for lone migrant children, as EU Commission joins far-right calls to send them back \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain has agreed to temporarily transfer 500 vulnerable minors to its mainland from Ceuta, three days after the EU Commission joined rightwing Spanish politicians in calls for all migrants there to be sent back to Morocco.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fate of migrant children sleeping on Ceuta\u2019s streets in their thousands has been the subject of polarising debate in Madrid: One one hand, Spanish law mandates automatic state protection of unaccompanied minors, but on the other hand, a rightwing-dominated parliament has called for all irregular arrivals to be returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the EU weighed into the toxic situation on Monday (18 August), taking the side of the right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe expectation is that all those who remain in Ceuta illegally will be returned,\u201d commission spokesperson Markus Lammert <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-293434\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/media\/video\/I-293434\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, referring specifically to the unaccompanied children and teenagers still in Spain\u2019s North African enclave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Lammert\u2019s views aside, the Spanish Immigration Act says such minors ought to be placed under the care of the child-protection services of the autonomous community where they arrived. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain\u2019s interior ministry said there were 2,500 children in that situation in Ceuta since 30 July, when <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/230915\/mass-sea-crossings-to-spains-ceuta-enclave-prompt-eu-anti-migrant-panic\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/230915\/mass-sea-crossings-to-spains-ceuta-enclave-prompt-eu-anti-migrant-panic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tens of thousands of people<\/a>, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, entered the enclave.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charity Save the Children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.es\/notasprensa\/save-children-recuerda-que-el-retorno-de-ninos-y-ninas-no-acompanados-debe-decidirse\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.es\/notasprensa\/save-children-recuerda-que-el-retorno-de-ninos-y-ninas-no-acompanados-debe-decidirse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimated <\/a>the figure was 4,000 and said most of them were sleeping on the streets, due to lack of space in child-reception facilities.\u00a0<a href=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/232609\/battles-at-ceutas-borders-increasingly-normalise-externalisation-brutality-says-migration-expert\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Vista_Parcial_De_Fnideq_Castillejos_Desde_Ceuta_158152499-600x389.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even using the smaller Spanish number, that was still &#8220;75 times more than the city&#8217;s capacity can take on, which is designed to accommodate only 29 minors,&#8221;
