{"id":116010,"date":"2025-05-20T03:20:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T03:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/116010\/"},"modified":"2025-05-20T03:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T03:20:09","slug":"world-press-photo-foundation-suspends-attribution-of-vietnam-war-image","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/116010\/","title":{"rendered":"World Press Photo Foundation Suspends Attribution of Vietnam War Image"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/world-press-photo-foundation\/\" id=\"auto-tag_world-press-photo-foundation\" data-tag=\"world-press-photo-foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Press Photo Foundation<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.worldpressphoto.org\/news\/2025\/authorship-attribution-suspended-for-the-terror-of-war\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldpressphoto.org\/news\/2025\/authorship-attribution-suspended-for-the-terror-of-war\" target=\"_blank\">suspended authorship attribution<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/associated-press\/\" id=\"auto-tag_associated-press\" data-tag=\"associated-press\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a> (AP) photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/nick-ut\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nick-ut\" data-tag=\"nick-ut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nick \u00dat<\/a> for the iconic 1972 photograph The Terror of War or Napalm Girl, which became a symbol of opposition during the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe attribution is under question after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theviifoundation.org\/films\/the-stringer\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/theviifoundation.org\/films\/the-stringer\/\" target=\"_blank\">new research by the VII Foundation was released as part of The Stringer documentary<\/a> in January 2025. Following an independent investigation by forensic analysts and media experts, the documentary asserts that is more likely that the stringer\u00a0Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u00e0nh Ngh\u1ec7 or Hu\u1ef3nh C\u00f4ng Ph\u00fac captured the fraught scene.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/07gardner2-master675.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/07gardner2-master675.jpg\" alt=\"World Press Photo Foundation Suspends Attribution of Vietnam War Image\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSeparate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/project\/terror-of-war\/#introduction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">follow-up investigations by AP<\/a>\u00a0and World Press Photo indicate uncertain authorship. As a result, World Press Photo suspended its attribution to \u00dat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cAs our report explains in great detail, there\u2019s simply not enough hard evidence or fact to remove the credit from Nick Ut, and it\u2019s impossible for anyone to know with certainty how exactly things played out on the road in the space of a few minutes over half a century ago,\u201d Derl McCrudden, AP\u2019s vice president and head of global news production, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/16\/business\/media\/vietnam-war-photo-ap.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/16\/business\/media\/vietnam-war-photo-ap.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cPeople need to have an open mind, need to see the film and all of the forensic reports and judge for themselves where the truth lies in this story,\u201d Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u00e0nh Ngh\u1ec7 added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe suspension of authorship is expected to last until it can be undoubtedly confirmed\u2014if ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe photo, however, is still undisputed and its award for \u201cPhoto of the Year\u201d in 1973 remains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe work shows five young children and four armed soldiers running from a napalm attack during the Vietnam War. The children appear to be running in terror, with 9-year-old Kim Phuc in particular naked and distressed. Taken on June 8, 1972, the image had an immediate and lasting global impact.
