{"id":1160464,"date":"2026-08-21T02:52:41","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T02:52:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1160464\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T02:52:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T02:52:41","slug":"ukraine-braces-for-combined-salvos-of-up-to-200-missiles-as-overnight-attack-kills-15-in-kyiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1160464\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine braces for combined salvos of up to 200 missiles as overnight attack kills 15 in Kyiv"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">KYIV, Ukraine \u2014 Russia is racing to nearly triple its biggest missile barrage, from 77 missiles fired at once to as many as 200, a salvo built to overwhelm Ukraine\u2019s air defenses in one shot rather than over days, the commander of Ukraine\u2019s Unmanned Systems Forces said last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Russia has been ramping up both its barrages and the production lines feeding them: it launched a record 351 missiles at Ukraine in July, including 153 cruise and 198 ballistic and hypersonic, while its factories ran at 110% to 120% of monthly production targets \u2013 already reaching their annual production goals for Zircon and Oniks missiles by early August, according to Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/newsukraine.rbc.ua\/interview\/d-1786341590.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Defence Intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe enemy currently has the capability to launch more than 70 (77) missiles of various types from different launch systems, ships and aircraft,\u201d Maj. Robert \u201cMagyar\u201d Brovdi wrote in an Aug. 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/robert_magyar\/2722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/t.me\/robert_magyar\/2722\">Telegram post<\/a>. \u201cThe enemy is working to increase the size of a single simultaneous salvo to as many as 200 missiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cEven if they only manage half of that, it will all be flying at us,\u201d Brovdi told the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/magyar-drones-russia-ukraine-crimea-ef27266b99b2b0a706e011b642d4c3a5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Associated Press<\/a> the same day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">A mixed barrage struck Kyiv shortly after midnight local time on Thursday, with more than a dozen explosions heard across the capital \u2013 a fraction of the salvo Brovdi says Moscow is building toward. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The strike killed at least 15 people and injured dozens across the capital alone, damaging several residential buildings, a school, a children\u2019s hospital and a kindergarten, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/vitaliy_klitschko\/7275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/t.me\/vitaliy_klitschko\/7275\">Kyiv officials<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Magyar\u2019s warning is that the country would likely face even higher numbers of dead in a combined attack of hundreds of Russian ballistic and cruise missiles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Ukraine\u2019s air defense network can intercept most drones and cruise missiles with cheaper systems, but Patriot and a handful of similar European systems are among the few systems capable of reliably intercepting ballistic and hypersonic missiles. Those interceptor stocks are at their lowest levels in years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Ukraine fields two and a half times fewer interceptors than it did in 2025 while Russia fires twice as many ballistic missiles a month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/12\/world\/patriots-ukraine-zelensky-interview-cnn-latam-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNN<\/a> on Aug. 12, with allied deliveries this year running at one-third of last year\u2019s levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cPatriot systems capable of shooting down ballistic missiles are essentially on a \u2018starvation ration,\u2019\u201d Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said in April after Russia fired more than 700 missiles over the winter, per <a href=\"https:\/\/censor.net\/ua\/news\/4000277\/rakety-do-patriot-v-ukrayini-v-defitsyti-rozpoviv-ignat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Censor.NET<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The shortage runs so deep that the Air Force decided in early August to stop publishing attack tallies for ballistic missile intercepts because of the negative impact on morale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cI understand that everyone already knows everything and sees that the topic is very sensitive, especially for the capital,\u201d Ihnat wrote in an Aug. 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/yuriy.ignat\/posts\/pfbid02XTJpB9mSd59jb4ZSiGXjtK2oB5N4TMPhpAYwBCrzAP9zoBqmiEa7qjkSDQbcYhz8l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cBut when we put an official message &#8211; 28\/0 (ballistic missiles intercepted) the result is that all our media write \u2018The Air Force did not shoot down a single missile,\u2019 and amplify it throughout the country. Meanwhile, enemy media will only copy all this and replicate it for themselves, giving a standing ovation!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The problem for Kyiv is that anti-ballistic interceptors remain the only immediate answer to the ballistic-missile threat, and they have been in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/07\/30\/iran-war-depleted-us-patriot-missile-stockpiles-creating-readiness-challenges-experts-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">short supply worldwide since the Iran war<\/a> began. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The United States has burned through roughly two-thirds of its combined Patriot and THAAD stockpile since that war started, from more than 2,700 missiles to fewer than 1,000 by late July, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Each PAC-3 replacement costs roughly $3.9 million and takes up to two years to build.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThere are no good alternatives to Patriot and THAAD for ballistic missile defense,\u201d the center\u2019s experts concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Ukraine is working on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2026\/07\/30\/the-arms-race-for-cheaper-anti-ballistic-weapons-is-underway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">several tracks to resolve the antiballistics shortage<\/a>, negotiating Patriot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/08\/14\/patriot-makers-hedge-on-ukraine-production-deal-as-officials-question-cause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">co-production agreements with Raytheon and Lockheed Martin<\/a>, though both makers have begun hedging, and backing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2026\/07\/10\/zelenskyy-taps-european-allies-to-build-freya-a-cheaper-patriot-alternative-to-russias-ballistic-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Freyja, a cheaper European interceptor program<\/a> led by Ukraine\u2019s Fire Point. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Experts put licensed Patriot production 24 to 30 months away, and Freyja\u2019s first intercept is not planned until the end of 2027, leaving interceptors from allied stockpiles as Kyiv\u2019s only immediate answer to protecting its cities from increasingly large missile attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cIf [the United States] can sell us 5%, we will go through the winter and save people\u2019s lives,\u201d Zelenskyy said last week. \u201cIf they can sell us 10%, we will destroy all the Russians\u2019 ballistic missiles.
