(Photo by Kin Cheung \u2013 WPA Pool\/Getty Images)\t<\/p>\n<p>Keir Starmer dramatically blew open the Brexit debate yesterday, hailing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/starmer-hails-a-new-deal-but-critics-pounce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a \u2018comprehensive\u2019 new pact<\/a> with the EU nearly 6 years after Boris Johnson\u2019s government signed a Brexit deal.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a UK-EU summit in central London, the Prime Minister heralded \u201ca new era in our relationship\u201d with the EU, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen branded the summit \u201ca historic moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starmer said his renegotiation of the 2019 Brexit deal \u201cdelivers what the British public voted for\u201d while also giving the UK \u201cunprecedented access to the EU market.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, despite being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/is-this-a-sweet-trade-deal-with-the-eu-or-does-it-sound-a-bit-fishy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">welcomed by many business organisations<\/a> the pact is set to reopen old wounds in Westminster.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch vowed to reverse the deal \u201cat the first opportunity\u201d while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage slammed Starmer\u2019s bid to build \u201ccloser ties to an ever-diminishing political union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fishing for a good deal?<\/p>\n<p>As part of a deal to secure easier access to the European market for British goods, the UK granted generous concessions to the EU on fishing rights \u2013 extending EU access to British waters for a further 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservatives accused Labour of \u201csacrificing\u201d the UK fishing industry, though Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the deal \u201cremoves the uncertainty\u201d of an \u201cannual haggling process,\u201d and replaces it with \u201cthe consistency of a long one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/keir-starmer-reaches-tentative-eu-trade-deal-ahead-of-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keir Starmer reaches tentative EU trade deal ahead of summit<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Boris Johnson, who was dethroned by his MPs in 2022, said Starmer had made the UK a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/boris-johnson-starmer-the-manacled-gimp-of-brussels-after-one-sided-eu-trade-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cnon-voting member of a two-tier European Union.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Much of the deal focused on the EU\u2019s treatment of British food and agricultural exports to the bloc which will now face considerably less friction. The UK has agreed to adopt EU rules on such products under a process known as \u201cdynamic alignment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>While retailers have welcomed the move, it has led to accusations that the UK will now be governed by EU rules over which it has little or no say.
