BERLIN, Aug 21 (Reuters) – Sebastian Lechner, the CDU state chairman \u200cof Lower Saxony, is calling for \u200cthe European Union to quickly impose import tariffs \u200bon Chinese hybrid cars, a letter seen by Reuters on Friday showed. <\/p>\n
\u2022 “It is precisely these hybrids that are currently facing the \u200cgreatest import \u2060pressure from Chinese automakers,” Lechner told Reuters later on Friday. <\/p>\n
\u2022 Lechner \u2060pointed to an OECD study showing that approximately 60% of the market share \u200bheld by \u200bChinese products abroad \u200bis attributable to \u200csubsidies, something he called a “distortion of competition” in trade policy. “We expect the European Commission and the German federal government to adjust our trade policy toward China,” the politician \u200csaid. <\/p>\n
\u2022 In Lower Saxony, \u200bthe issue is an \u200bimportant one \u200bfor the Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen Group. <\/p>\n
\u2022 \u200cImport duties are already \u200bin place \u200bfor electric cars from China and Lechner said EU tariffs on hybrid cars \u200bfrom China \u200cmust be imposed quickly. <\/p>\n
