Russian drones slammed into a busy shopping centre in the eastern city of Kryvyi Rig Friday afternoon, killing five people and wounding dozens of others.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned it as a \u201ccynical and despicable\u201d attack.<\/p>\n
Videos on social media showed rescuers rushing to help the wounded on the street outside, as smoke poured out of the building.<\/p>\n
Then a second drone then smashed into the roof of the building around half an hour later \u2014 a repeat strike that had \u201ctargeted the emergency responders\u201d, said Zelensky.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs of now, five deaths have been reported,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, said another 91 people had been wounded \u2014 21 of them seriously.<\/p>\n
Shops inside the mall were on fire, he added.<\/p>\n
Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has come under repeated Russian attacks throughout the war.<\/p>\n
The industrial city lies roughly 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the front line.<\/p>\n
Russia has intensified its bombardments of Ukrainian cities in recent months.<\/p>\n
The United Nations reported that the civilian death toll in 2026 had risen to its highest level since the first months of the war.<\/p>\n
Zelensky urged a strong response from Ukraine\u2019s allies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe world must respond to them accordingly \u2013- with real pressure on the aggressor. For peace to be possible, Russia must face real accountability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
