Ben Stiller<\/a>\u2019s career as an actor was never in question, but the same couldn\u2019t have been said of his prospects as a filmmaker.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not uncommon for actors to try their hands at directing, as many of the best filmmakers of all-time began their careers in front of the screen; John Huston, Ron Howard, Woody Allen, Penny Marshall, and Clint Eastwood have been so acclaimed as filmmakers<\/a> that it\u2019s easy to forget that they started off as up-and-coming stars. Ben Stiller has one of the more unusual career trajectories because his work as a director couldn\u2019t be more different from his persona as an actor and comedian.<\/p>\n While it would have been easy to label Stiller a \u201cnepo baby\u201d because of his famous parents, he quickly proved himself a talented actor and comedian in the 1990s and made one of the most important films of the Gen X movement with his directorial debut, Reality Bites, in 1994. <\/p>\n Following Reality Bites\u2019 success, Stiller began filming The Cable Guy, starring Jim Carrey, who had broken out as the comedic voice of a generation in 1994<\/a> with three massive hits that same year. Carrey was joined by Matthew Broderick and Jack Black in The Cable Guy. <\/p>\n However, the mixed response hit Stiller hard, and he said it caused him to rethink how he approached his career. \u201cIn \u201996, I got a new agent right before The Cable Guy bombed,\u201d Stiller said<\/a>. His first piece of advice was not to do anything for six months. He said I was in \u2018movie jail\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n The term \u201cmovie jail\u201d or \u201cdirector jail\u201d is often used to describe a filmmaker who is deemed unemployable after a high-profile flop or disappointment. Fortunately for Stiller, his career as an actor began to take off.<\/p>\n After The Cable Guy, Stiller had a hilarious cameo in Happy Gilmore 2 and an acclaimed performance in David O Russell\u2019s independent comedy Flirting with Disaster. Two years later, he starred in There\u2019s Something About Mary, one of the biggest hits of the decade.<\/p>\n Further reading: Cutting Room Floor<\/strong><\/p>\n Stiller\u2019s viability as an actor meant that he was given more opportunities to direct, but only if he could also star. Zoolander initially sparked controversy as the first major comedy released after 9\/11, but it became a beloved, highly successful film. Tropic Thunder allowed Stiller to get in even deeper with his satire of Hollywood, and generated serious acclaim for the performances he had gotten out of Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise.<\/p>\n Interestingly, Stiller is now best known as a more serious filmmaker<\/a> for his work directing Emmy-nominated dramas such as Escape at Dannemora and Severance.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
