No studio in rock and pop history is as entwined with a band\u2019s lore as EMI Studios witnessing the bulk of The Beatles<\/a>\u2018 dazzling sessions.<\/p>\n Since being named Abbey Road Studios after the Fab Four\u2019s namesake album, the famous recording facility in London\u2019s St John\u2019s Wood has stood as an essential Beatles tourist hot spot from every inch of the globe, with throngs of fans descending to the famous zebra crossing to the daily ire of local drivers, with as much pilgrimage pull as Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane back in the band\u2019s Liverpool hometown. There\u2019s no question that the little Merseybeat band elevated the EMI Studios to its world-class stature.<\/p>\n As fans know, the overwhelming volume of The Beatles\u2019 material was captured at EMI, specifically around 90% all in the site\u2019s famous Studio Two, with Three used for occasional late-night overdubs and mixes, and the mammoth One\u2019s orchestral room for the likes of \u2018A Day in the Life\u2019s grand 40-piece symphony. For the most part, any Beatles cut was laid down at Abbey Road with George Martin in the producer\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n However, even EMI\u2019s biggest client sometimes needed a new studio, be it for creative renewal, scheduling issues, or the simple need for hardware Abbey Road just couldn\u2019t offer. It turns out that a handful of studios wound up hosting The Beatles for some of their most loved numbers.<\/p>\n So, what Beatles songs weren\u2019t cut at EMI Studios?<\/p>\n While in Paris shortly after With the Beatles, the Beatles headed to EMI Path\u00e9 Marconi Studios in January 1964 to record their new vocals for \u2018Komm, gib mir deine Hand\u2019 and \u2018Sie liebt dich\u2019 for the German market<\/a>, a language revision of \u2018I Want to Hold Your Hand\u2019 and \u2018She Loves You\u2019 cut at EMI\u2019s behest to sell more copies. While there, the band recorded \u2018Can\u2019t Buy Me Love\u2019 to appear on the upcoming A Hard Day\u2019s Night.<\/p>\n It would take three years before any Fab Four material was handled outside EMI. Due to EMI\u2019s lack of availability at the last minute, the Sgt Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band sessions had to make a brief detour to central London\u2019s Regent Sound Studio to cut the backing track for Paul McCartney\u2019s whimsical \u2018Fixing a Hole\u2019. Later that year, George Harrison would record his trippy \u2018It\u2019s All Too Much\u2019 at De Lane Lea Studios nearby; Chappell Recording Studios oversaw \u2018Your Mother Should Know\u2019, and Olympic handled \u2018Baby You\u2019re a Rich Man\u2019s cut and mix in one night, plus backing tracks for \u2018All You Need Is Love\u2019 before EMI\u2019s orchestral overdubs later.<\/p>\n Due to EMI taking their time to test and quality-control the highly prized 8-track recorder before making it available to use, the band headed over to Trident Studios to lay down parts to \u2018Hey Jude\u2019, \u2018Honey Pie\u2019, \u2018Martha My Dear\u2019, and \u2018Savoy Truffle\u2019, with \u2018Dear Prudence\u2019 entirely recorded there after Ringo Starr\u2019s brief departure. The following year, the band would head back to Olympic to record backing tracks to \u2018You Never Give Me Your Money\u2019.<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/strong><\/p>\n As we know, the sessions that led to Let It Be were infamously chaotic and near enough cemented The Beatles\u2019 eventual end. While no master takes from the Twickenham Film Studios were ever used, virtually all of the material on the final album was recorded at the makeshift Apple Studio in their company\u2019s Savile Row offices, even having to borrow mixing consoles from EMI, cap in hand, due to tech failure.<\/p>\n
