{"id":11646,"date":"2025-04-11T19:29:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T19:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/11646\/"},"modified":"2025-04-11T19:29:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T19:29:11","slug":"ahead-of-nuclear-talks-germany-calls-for-a-diplomatic-solution-between-iran-and-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/11646\/","title":{"rendered":"Ahead of nuclear talks, Germany calls for a \u2018diplomatic solution\u2019 between Iran and US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Donald-Trump-and-Ali-Khamenei-AP-file-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Ahead of nuclear talks, Germany calls for a \u2018diplomatic solution\u2019 between Iran and US\" title=\"Donald Trump and Ali Khamenei (AP file photo)Donald Trump and Ali Khamenei (AP file photo)\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/>Donald Trump and Ali Khamenei (AP file photo)Donald Trump and Ali Khamenei (AP file photo) Longtime adversaries Iran and the US are set to hold talks on Tehran\u2019s nuclear programme this Saturday, in which Germany has urged for a \u201cdiplomatic solution\u201d. <br \/>In a conference on Friday, German foreign ministry spokesman Christian Wagner stressed the need for a diplomatic solution, emphasizing &#8220;positive development that there is a channel for dialogue between Iran and the United States&#8221;.<br \/>Initially, Trump had urged on holding talks directly; however, Iran\u2019s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, insisted on indirectly talking through US envoy Steve Witkoff.<br \/>On April 9, Trump had urged that a military action was absolutely \u201cpossible\u201d if the talks between both countries fail at producing a deal. <br \/>The talks are to be held in Muscat, Oman, which has previously mediated between the West and Tehran.<br \/>Christian Wagner emphasised that the shared goal was to find a solution so that \u201c Iran does not develop nuclear weapons, as this would have enormous destabilising effects on the entire region&#8221;<br \/>Wagner said that &#8220;Finding a resolution to this issue becomes increasingly urgent\u201d and that Germany &#8220;remains extremely concerned about the Iranian nuclear programme&#8230; Iran has continuously escalated the situation, significantly expanding enrichment capacities.\u201d<br \/>In 2003, Iran had negotiated with EU3 (the UK, France and Germany) over its nuclear programme. <br \/>In 2015, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany, struck a security accord with Iran, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This imposed significant restrictions on Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.<br \/>In 2018, the US under President Trump withdrew from this deal, claiming that they failed to contain Iran\u2019s regional influence and missile programme.<br \/>Last year, Iran had engaged in several rounds of talks with EU3 about its nuclear programme.
