{"id":1164753,"date":"2026-08-23T11:46:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T11:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1164753\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T11:46:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T11:46:21","slug":"more-avoidable-deaths-could-come-at-scandal-hit-nhs-trust-retired-consultant-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1164753\/","title":{"rendered":"More avoidable deaths could come at scandal-hit NHS trust, retired consultant says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">More patients at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) hospitals will die avoidable deaths unless major changes are made, a retired consultant doctor has said in an urgent warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Dr Glyn Smurthwaite, 65, was a consultant at Salford Royal who worked there from 1995 to 2024 and said it is \u2018utterly unsafe\u2019 and \u2018toxic\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It comes as <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/human-cost-hospital-trust-under-34485340\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">dozens of patients have died or come to harm<\/a> at NCA hospitals due to treatment delays and staffing errors according to the trusts\u2019 own reports, with a workforce which is under extreme pressure and facing high levels of staff absences over sickness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a aria-label=\"Click hereLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=b8052254-66af-41f3-9dae-7bbb0e3391c6&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to get the biggest stories straight to your inbox in our Daily Newsletter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The NCA manages hospitals in Salford, Bury, Oldham and Rochdale, treating more than a million patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Manchester Evening News (M.E.N) has spoken to patients who were treated at NCA hospitals, with experiences of people \u2018screaming in pain\u2019 while staff were \u2018too busy\u2019 to help, and a 76-year-old who spent 36 hours on a trolley in A&amp;E and claimed she became \u2018really poorly\u2019 after experiencing the NCA\u2019s standards of care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Lengthy delays at NCA hospitals were linked with \u201828 deaths\u2019 and 56 issues of \u2018severe harm\u2019, while problems diagnosing illness led to ten deaths last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Northern Care Alliance said that it is facing challenges but is working to address concerns.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u2018Crumbling and toxic\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI was appointed in 1995 and I left because the place was crumbling and toxic in 2023 early 2024,\u201d Dr Glyn Smurthwaite said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been a campaigner ever since because the place is utterly unsafe, and it\u2019s led by an utterly incompetent out of touch board who don\u2019t have a clue what\u2019s happening on the shop floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt was failing miserably before the NCA was envisaged. It started to go wrong I would say 2008 or 2009, at this point around 2010 certainly things were getting worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The retired consultant said there was a \u2018system of governance that utterly failed and was incompetent\u2019, and has called for the removal of the current board of directors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Salford Royal Hospital is part of the Northern Care Alliance\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/0_JS213395516-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Salford Royal Hospital is part of the Northern Care Alliance\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Salford Royal Hospital is part of the Northern Care Alliance(Image: MEN)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">One of the problems that has led to the crisis at the NCA is how the Datix patient safety reporting system is used, Dr Smurthwaite explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: \u201cOne of the questions when you fill the form in is if you want feedback, I always ask for feedback, I filled in hundreds and I honestly can tell you not a single one has ever resulted in anything meaningful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s completely ineffective. It\u2019s not an ineffective system, it\u2019s ineffective because the people who run it are ineffective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Dr Smurthwaite alleged that some consultant doctors are being appointed at NCA hospitals as \u2018locums\u2019, which are staff appointed on a temporary basis without needing to be on the General Medical Council\u2019s specialist register.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: &#8220;The specialist register is a GMC [General Medical Council] document, so if you are a fully trained specialist you end up on the specialist register.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;There is a piece of statute, it is written into law, you cannot appoint a consultant in the medical fraternity who is not on the specialist register, that&#8217;s driven to protect the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a caveat to that, you can appoint a locum who isn\u2019t on the specialist register, a locum being a temporary post, but you can only appoint a locum to fill a gap, such as maternity leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cRochdale and Oldham and Bury have got dozens of doctors who were appointed almost certainly as locums, who have morphed into permanent jobs. This is a failure of HR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The question is why has Oldham got a lot of doctors called consultants who are not on the specialist register? They\u2019ve done that to fill gaps, but you\u2019re not allowed to do that to fill gaps. The question is why is that hospital so unpopular and nobody wants to apply?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Asked if there could be more avoidable deaths at NCA hospitals without urgent changes, Dr Smurthwaite said: \u201cUndoubtedly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He added: \u201cYou&#8217;ve got a huge tranche of non-clinical managers, they\u2019ve grown like rabbits, and you\u2019ve got a board generally run by people who are just managers with no insight at all about what the actual shop floor does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Asked what needs to be done to improve, he said: \u201cThe board needs to be removed and whichever new board is imported needs to genuinely start showing interest and finding out what are the problems on the shop floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThat is the problem, the disengage between the people managing the organisation and what the organisation actually does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt is terrifying, I wouldn&#8217;t go to any NCA sites as a patient, I mean any of them. And I worked there for 30 years, I am acutely embarrassed about the state of the NCA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">&#8216;I was shouting for help for 15 minutes&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Patients who received care at Salford Royal have shared experiences they say left them deeply concerned about standards of care at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Joshua, who asked not to give his surname, said he spent around 16 weeks in hospital on and off after developing a &#8220;life-threatening&#8221; infection following a non-urgent knee surgery at Fairfield General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said he was admitted to Salford Royal with septic arthritis around a week after undergoing the keyhole surgery on his knee. He subsequently underwent several procedures and courses of antibiotics, but said the infection repeatedly returned &#8211; and he eventually required a through-knee amputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Joshua described instances when he said basic care was delayed or missed on the hospital&#8217;s trauma and orthopedic ward, including meals, water and medication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He also described &#8220;one of the worst incidents&#8221;, when he claims he was left bleeding heavily after a &#8220;considerable surgery&#8221; and was forced to shout for help for 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;As soon as I stood up after [ward staff] left, it started bleeding everywhere,&#8221; Joshua told the M.E.N. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t mobile and I was trying to get hold of someone. I was shouting &#8216;help&#8217; out of the door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It took about 15 minutes for someone to acknowledge I was shouting for help. They came rushing in and there was blood everywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/0_JS249503171.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester(Image: MEN)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said he spent several hospital admissions in one of the ward&#8217;s &#8220;side rooms&#8221;, which he said are typically reserved for patients who are the &#8220;most ill&#8221; or have &#8220;specific types of infections&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;There were numerous occasions where they forgot about me at meal times,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The evening meal would go around the ward and they would skip me. I wasn&#8217;t given regular water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Urine bottles would build up and stand there until I asked the staff to take them away. There were other bedbound patients in the general ward who were so desperate for the toilet that they would pee in their water jug. Every time we tried to get hold of the nurse they would say, &#8216;I&#8217;ll be with you in a minute&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He also claims there were a number of occasions where pain medication or antibiotic treatment was delayed, claiming he was forced to &#8220;beg and plead&#8221; with ward staff for pain relief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;You&#8217;d have grown men wailing in bed because they were in so much pain and the nursing staff were too busy,&#8221; Joshua said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Doses would get skipped,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I had a few instances where my IV antibiotics were skipped because they had run so late that they couldn&#8217;t give me the missed dose because it was too close to the next one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Joshua believes staff shortages and pressure on the ward were behind some of the problems he experienced. He also believes some aspects of his care may have affected how well the infection was controlled, but admits he has &#8220;no way to prove&#8221; this.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">&#8216;It&#8217;s horrific what I&#8217;ve seen these last six months&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Another woman, who will remain anonymous, said her 76-year-old mother was sent to the hospital&#8217;s emergency department by her GP in January after dangerously low blood pressure readings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said her mother, who has heart failure, spent around 30 hours on a trolley in an A&amp;E corridor and was not given a pillow or blanket. She claims her mother was eventually discharged by an A&amp;E nurse with tablets, which she later believed were the wrong strength of medication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">And during a separate hospital visit weeks later, the woman said her mother spent another 36 hours on a trolley in A&amp;E. Following admission to the cardiology ward, she claims issues with medication persisted, with her mother given doses she believed were incorrect or insufficient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said: &#8220;My mum was quite paranoid in hospital in the end. She wrote everything down each day because nurses were coming and giving her the wrong tablet or not enough tablets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It was just horrendous. She wrote every single day down. She just lost trust with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The woman said she is &#8220;really angry&#8221; about her mum&#8217;s treatment by the hospital, claiming the now-77-year-old remains &#8220;really poorly&#8221;, suffering from subsequent comorbidities that she claims are linked to the hospital&#8217;s standards of care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said: &#8220;Salford Royal did save my mum&#8217;s life years ago and she loves [the hospital], but the A&amp;E is just in a really bad place\u2026It&#8217;s horrific what I&#8217;ve seen these last six months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m really angry about what happened,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The issues at the NCA have sparked major concerns among local leaders and politicians in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Salford MP Rebecca Long-Bailey said: \u201cI have been raising patient safety and whistleblowing concerns at the NCA for some time, working with patients, families and staff affected by the John Bradley Williamson case, challenging the Trust over Salford gynaecology, and taking concerns directly to Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThese latest allegations strengthen the case I have already been making: staff must be able to speak up safely, concerns must be properly investigated, and there must be independent scrutiny where the Trust has failed to act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThis is not about undermining the many dedicated staff working across the NCA. I gave birth to my daughter in the Royal Oldham, and my family continues to use that hospital when needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI am therefore very concerned to read about the issues within the NCA and, on behalf of local residents, have written to the chief executive to demand an update in person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe vast majority of people will only have positive things to say about the wonderful staff in our NHS, but we depend on these hospitals to keep us in good health and care for us in emergencies. Something has clearly gone wrong and situations like this erode the trust of patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe need swift action to reassure us that the health service we deserve is being provided. I will also raise this issue with the health secretary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Council bosses have also expressed concerns about the situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Salford, Bury and Oldham councils have issued similar statements about the issues at the NCA, explaining that they are aware of the concerns at local hospitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A Salford City Council Spokesperson said: \u201cPatient safety must always be the highest priority across the NHS, and it is important that any concerns raised by staff are investigated thoroughly and transparently through the appropriate processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSalford City Council has been made aware of the concerns being raised about patient safety and services provided by the Northern Care Alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt would not be appropriate for us to comment any further until those investigations have been completed. Clearly this wasn&#8217;t the case at the Royal Salford Hospital and patients were severely let down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cNHS England is working at pace with the trust and Greater Manchester ICB to support rapid improvement , strengthen oversight and accountability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe are also prioritising gynaecology services in surgical hubs, at Community Diagnostic Centres, and in pathways for NHS Online.
